How to find the best gardening books<\/h2>\n

I’m really ignorant! Every now and then I go to a book-selling site and look for some on gardens. This time I bought \u201cThe Garden of Misunderstandings. Counter-history of the garden from Babylon to Land Art\u201d by Guido Giubbini. I didn’t know Guido Giubbini and I had never heard of this book.<\/p>\n

Reading it I realize that it can easily be considered a cult book of the history of the garden. Something you can’t not read either when you study or later.<\/h1>\n

But who is Guido Giubbini the author of “The Garden of Misunderstandings”?<\/h2>\n

This gentleman, born in 1941 and who founded the Museum of Contemporary Art in Genoa, wrote about the history and criticism of engraving and printing, the representation of the city and the territory and the art of the 19th and 20th centuries.<\/p>\n

In the 1960s he bought a house with a garden and took care of it for twenty years after which he decided that in order to design the external space he had to study the subject in depth “the formal models that had followed one another in the various geographical areas and historical periods and which still influence, consciously or unconsciously, the appearance of the contemporary garden”<\/em> (cit. from the book).<\/p>\n

Like the most beautiful brains in the world, he takes it far away and starts studying styles not only in books, but also traveling around the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For example, he discovers, or rather, realizes that today someone wants to convince us that the magnificent and technologically advanced Hanging Gardens of Babylon existed, but elsewhere and the book ‘the garden book’ (2000) immediately takes it for good. Who was Capability Brown and how did he get there?<\/h3>\n

History does not always return over time the figures who have distinguished themselves with due justice. One of these figures seems to be Capability Brown, a garden architect who, for having broken with the past and having “jumped the ditch” between formal and informal gardens, has historically been denigrated by reducing him to “the one who destroyed our English tradition of flower garden”.<\/p>\n

This great professional instead interpreted a new era, abandoning small temples and statues and returning the main figure to nature.<\/p>\n

\u201c[\u2026] Capability Brown rejected statues, inscriptions and small temples because he considered the allegorical and mythological programs underlying them heteronomous with respect to gardening: the garden had to speak with its own language, with the words of plants, water and grass , and the syntax of woods and glades.\u201d<\/em> (Lancelot <Capability>Brown and the natural landscape<\/em> \u2018Rosae\u2019 magazine giu-lug 2003)<\/p>\n

Another important insight done by Guido Giubbini in “The Garden of Misunderstandings” concerns the gardens of Versailles, but if I had to address all the topics covered in the book, I would take away much of the pleasure of reading it and instead it is worth doing, so be patient.<\/p>\n

Why read “The Garden of Misunderstandings” by Guido Giubbini?<\/h2>\n

At the end of the book I feel honored to have been able to read it.<\/p>\n

In this book the ability to think with one’s own head catches the eye. Guido Giubbini was not satisfied with the information he found and decided to go to the source to find out more. Maybe something didn’t add up to him, maybe an intuition put him on the streets of the world to explore the topics that were close to his heart. Perhaps his nature as a historian who delves into information has also come out in this case, and we just have to thank him for this pearl of knowledge that will allow us to delve into the topics he summarized in this book.<\/p>\n

How I would have loved to interview this man, but at the ripe old age of 81 I don’t think he’s interested in this kind of commitment. In fact, perhaps more than interviewing him, I would listen to him in rapt silence as he tells me whatever he wants to tell.<\/p>\n

Questo signore, nato nel \u201941 e che ha fondato il Museo di Arte Contemporanea a Genova, ha scritto di storia e critica di incisione e stampa, rappresentazione della citt\u00e0 e del territorio e arte di Ottocento e Novecento.<\/p>\r\n

Negli anni \u201960 compra una casa con giardino e se ne occupa per vent\u2019anni dopo di che decide che per progettarne lo spazio esterno deve studiare l\u2019argomento approfondendo \u201ci modelli formali che si erano succeduti nelle varie aree geografiche ed epoche storiche e che influenzano tuttora, in modo consapevole o inconsapevole, l\u2019aspetto del giardino contemporaneo\u201d<\/em> (cit. dal libro).<\/p>\r\n

Un altro interessante approfondimento \u00e8 quello sui giardini dell\u2019Alhambra e Generalife (o del Partal) del quale dice che la parte pi\u00f9 interessante e simile all\u2019originale \u00e8 la seconda, soprattutto per l\u2019utilizzo dell\u2019acqua che viene portata in alto per poi riscendere tramite cascatelle, catene e specchi d\u2019acqua fino al muro di recinzione.<\/p>\r\n

La storia non sempre restituisce nel tempo le figure che si sono distinte con la dovuta giustizia. Una di queste figure sembra essere Capability Brown, un architetto dei giardini che, per aver rotto con il passato ed aver \u201csaltato il fosso\u201d tra giardino formale e informale, \u00e8 stato storicamente denigrato riducendolo a \u201ccolui che ha distrutto la nostra tradizione inglese del giardino dei fiori\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

Questo grandissimo professionista invece interpretava una nuova era, abbandonando tempietti e statue e restituendo la figura principale alla natura.<\/p>\r\n

\u201c[\u2026] Capability Brown rifiutava statue, iscrizioni e tempietti perch\u00e9 riteneva i programmi allegorici e mitologici a essi sottesi eteronomi rispetto al fare giardino: il giardino doveva parlare con la propria lingua, con i vocaboli delle piante, dell\u2019acqua e dell\u2019erba, e la sintassi dei boschi e delle radure.\u201d<\/em> (Lancelot Brown e il paesaggio naturale<\/em> Rivista \u2018Rosae\u2019 giu-lug 2003)<\/p>\r\n

Alla fine del libro mi sento onorata di aver potuto leggerlo.<\/p>\r\n

In questo libro salta all\u2019occhio la capacit\u00e0 di ragionare con la propria testa. Guido Giubbini non si \u00e8 accontentato delle informazioni che trovava ed ha deciso di andare alla fonte per saperne di pi\u00f9. Forse qualcosa non gli tornava, forse un\u2019intuizione lo ha messo sulle strade del mondo per approfondire gli argomenti che gli stavano a cuore. Forse la sua indole di storico che scava tra le informazioni \u00e8 uscita anche in questo caso, e a noi non resta che ringraziarlo per questa perla di conoscenza che ci permetter\u00e0 di approfondire argomenti da lui sintetizzati in questo libro.<\/p>\r\n

Quanto mi sarebbe piaciuto intervistare quest\u2019uomo, ma alla veneranda et\u00e0 di 81 anni non credo sia interessato a tal genere di impegno. Le case editrici ci farebbero grandemente felici se sviluppassero la tecnologia del libro elettronico. Capisco che ora come ora non sia remunerativo venderli perch\u00e9 poco protetti dalle frodi, ma si parla di ecologia, di comodit\u00e0 di lettura e di grande risparmio di spazio a casa.
