During the Lectio Magistralis in Bergamo, Cassian Schmidt illustrated his vision of the landscape, based on the observation of natural plant communities and the importance of balance between species. His approach proposes resilient gardens, without artificial irrigation, adaptable to the climate and sustainable. He emphasized how plants, social beings, must be designed in relation to each other, even in urban environments, to create habitats useful to humans and the environment.<\/h5>\n

The design of the garden and the landscape: The Master’s indications<\/h2>\n

Cassian Schmidt’s Lectio Magistralis was held on 8 September in upper Bergamo, explaining the intervention in Piazza Vecchia and the philosophy from which this intervention starts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the occasion of the Landscape Festival, the Landscape Architect Cassian Schmidt, who is considered a leader in the “New German Style” he has been working on for twenty years, spoke during the event in a meeting to explain  \u201cHis research at Hermannshof [che] focuses on natural plant communities […] as models for new sustainable plant combinations for the urban environment ” <\/em>(from the interview with Anke Schmitz of 10 May 2021)<\/p>\n

In fact, in Germany the well-known Landscape Architect is dealing with the communities of plants and the influence of these groups in the landscape, mainly studying the North American prairies and the steppes of Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

\n

How are his studies revolutionizing garden and landscape design?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We will see this by deepening his lesson.<\/p>\n

His dissertation started from the Adda riparian forest 20 km from Bergamo. He speaks of a mixed tree community, disordered yet in balance: figs, vines, willows, grasses, carex, mosquitoes.<\/p>\n

\n

This forest is not always frendly, but this is its strength, its added value.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We always start from the analysis of what exists and try to understand why it is in balance and is so well developed. By studying the essences and the relationships that each plant has with the one next to it, you discover which essences go or don’t get along: why it happens and how to exploit its potential even in an urbanized environment.<\/p>\n

The purpose of these studies is to define the communities of plants that make it possible to design different habitats at the service of man.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which plants will survive in the future?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The climate is changing fast and we need to be prepared for the changes, but we can also prevent the damage of the lack of plants in urbanized places.<\/p>\n

The basics of garden and landscape design<\/h2>\n

Plants oxygenate the atmosphere, lower the temperature especially at night, retain moisture and improve aesthetics.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The garden, although fenced and private, is still an ecosystem that fits among the other surrounding ecosystems and as such should be thought of as part of the landscape.<\/p>\n

Thinking about plants is useful for plants, but also and above all for man.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cassian Schmidt’s studies are going in the direction of the garden without artificial irrigation: only natural irrigation.<\/p>\n

Plant communities are dynamic events: plants change over time and therefore the maintenance that is dedicated to them also changes. In this sense, the evolution of maintenance must therefore go hand in hand with that of design.<\/p>\n

Plants in communities form habitats that must be placed in the right situation to give the best of themselves. Essences are social beings and these social relationships must be studied and understood in order to be reproduced and respected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What are the recognized ecosystems? For example the tropical forest, the humid grassland, the dry steppe, the Mediterranean scrub common in Italy tolerant to drought, the prairie, etc.<\/p>\n

Flexibility in this approach is essential because not all years are dry, some are wetter and there are also destructive events. For this reason, investments by public administrations must be thought over the long term to address the dynamic processes of plants that are living beings and change over time.<\/p>\n

CSR MODEL<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cassian Schmidt, for obvious reasons of time, only hints at a gigantic study, all to be explored, carried out by Mr. Grime which is partially synthesized in the pyramid that represents the CSR model. These studies are working with stress-resistant plants to prevent water evaporation.<\/p>\n

Some examples of urban regeneration and redevelopment of green spaces<\/h2>\n

To clarify the matter better, Maestro Cassian Schmidt presented examples of some works carried out by his wife on industrial and public areas such as parking lots with the qualification of green spaces<\/strong> designed as infrastructures for storing rainwater. This technology allows you to create areas below the greenery where excess water, after feeding the plants, is collected.<\/p>\n

I realize that I have only introduced a series of very important studies that need to be deepened and put into practice by the whole world of landscaping, starting with professionals as well as public administrations.<\/p>\n

THE INTERVENTION OF ANCI<\/h3>\n

The Vice President of ANCI Lombardia who intervened before the intervention of Arch. Schmidt did not hide the situation in which the municipalities find themselves, on the one hand having to invest in greenery with the planting of new trees, on the other hand in managing citizens who ask for the removal of trees near their homes for fear of collapses. <\/em><\/p>\n

L\u20198 settembre a Bergamo alta si \u00e8 tenuta la Lectio Magistralis di Cassian Schmidt che ha spiegato l\u2019intervento di Piazza Vecchia e la filosofia da cui parte questo intervento.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

In occasione del Landscape Festival l'Architetto Paesaggista Cassian Schmidt, che viene considerato un leader nel \u201cNew German Style\u201d su cui si cimenta da vent\u2019anni, \u00e8 intervenuto durante la manifestazione in un incontro per spiegare\u00a0 \u201cLa sua ricerca presso Hermannshof [che] si concentra sulle comunit\u00e0 vegetali naturali [\u2026] come modelli per nuove combinazioni vegetali sostenibili per l'ambiente urbano\u201d <\/em>(dall\u2019intervista di Anke Schmitz del 10 maggio 2021)<\/p>\r\n

In Germania infatti l\u2019affermato Architetto Paesaggista si sta occupando delle comunit\u00e0 di piante e dell\u2019influenza di questi gruppi nel panorama paesaggistico studiando principalmente le praterie nordamericane e le steppe dell\u2019Europa orientale.<\/p>\r\n

In che modo i suoi studi stanno rivoluzionando la progettazione del giardino e del paesaggio?<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Lo vedremo approfondendo la sua lezione.<\/p>\r\n

La sua dissertazione \u00e8 partita dalla Foresta ripariale dell\u2019Adda a 20 km da Bergamo. Parla di comunit\u00e0 arborea mista, disordinata eppur in equilibrio: fichi, viti, salici, graminacee, carex, zanzare.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n

Questa foresta non \u00e8 sempre frendly, ma in questo sta la sua forza, il suo valore aggiunto.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Si parte sempre dall\u2019analisi dell\u2019esistente e si cerca di capire perch\u00e9 \u00e8 in equilibrio ed \u00e8 cos\u00ec ben sviluppato. Studiando le essenze ed i rapporti che ogni pianta ha con quella accanto si scoprono quali essenze vanno o non vanno d\u2019accordo: perch\u00e9 capita e come sfruttarne le potenzialit\u00e0 anche in un ambiente urbanizzato.<\/p>\r\n

Il fine di questi studi \u00e8 definire le comunit\u00e0 di piante che permettano di disegnare diversi habitat a servizio dell\u2019uomo.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

\r\n

Quali piante potranno sopravvivere in futuro?<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Le basi della progettazione del giardino e del paesaggio<\/h2>\r\n
\r\n

Le piante ossigenano l\u2019atmosfera, abbassano la temperatura soprattutto di notte, trattengono l\u2019umidit\u00e0 e migliorano l\u2019estetica.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Il giardino, pur recintato e privato \u00e8 comunque un ecosistema che si inserisce tra gli altri ecosistemi circostanti e come tale va pensato come parte del paesaggio.<\/p>\r\n

Pensare alle piante serve alle piante, ma anche e soprattutto all\u2019uomo.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Gli studi di Cassian Schmidt stanno andando nella direzione del giardino senza irrigazione artificiale: solo irrigazione naturale.<\/p>\r\n

Le comunit\u00e0 di piante sono eventi dinamici: le piante cambiano nel tempo e cambia anche quindi la manutenzione che va loro dedicata. In questo senso l\u2019evoluzione della manutenzione quindi deve andare di pari passo con quella della progettazione.<\/p>\r\n

Le piante in comunit\u00e0 formano habitat che vanno inseriti nella giusta situazione per dare il meglio di s\u00e9. Le essenze sono esseri sociali e questi rapporti sociali devono essere studiati e capiti per poi essere riprodotti e rispettati.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Quali sono gli ecosistemi riconosciuti? Ad esempio la Foresta tropicale, la Prateria Umida, la Steppa Secca, la Macchia Mediterranea comune in Italia tollerante alla siccit\u00e0, la Prateria, ecc.<\/p>\r\n

La flessibilit\u00e0 in questo approccio \u00e8 fondamentale perch\u00e9 non tutti gli anni sono secchi, alcuni sono pi\u00f9 umidi e vi sono anche eventi distruttivi. Per questo motivo gli investimenti delle amministrazioni pubbliche devono essere pensati a lungo termine per affrontare i processi dinamici delle piante che sono esseri viventi e cambiano nel tempo.<\/p>\r\n

IL MODELLO CSR<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Cassian Schmidt, per ovvi motivi di tempo, accenna solo ad un gigantesco studio, tutto da approfondire, effettuato dal Sig. Grime che in parte viene sintetizzato nella piramide che rappresenta il modello CSR. Alcuni esempi di rigenerazione urbana e riqualifica degli spazi verdi<\/h2>\r\n

Per chiarire meglio l\u2019argomento, il Maestro Cassian Schmidt ha presentato esempi di alcuni lavori eseguiti dalla moglie su zone industriali e pubbliche come parcheggi con la riqualifica degli spazi verdi<\/strong> pensati come infrastrutture atte ad immagazzinare l\u2019acqua piovana. Questa tecnologia permette di creare delle zone sottostanti il verde dove l\u2019acqua in eccesso, dopo aver nutrito le piante, viene raccolta.<\/p>\r\n

L'INTERVENTO DELL'ANCI<\/h3>\r\n

Il Vice presidente dell\u2019ANCI Lombardia che \u00e8 intervenuto prima dell\u2019intervento dell\u2019Arch.
