During the Lectio Magistralis in Bergamo Alta, architect Martin Rein Cano illustrated the principles of his work with Topotek1, founded in 1996. The four cornerstones of the project are: Contextualization and Resonance, Identity and Narrative, Sustainability and Programming, Temporality and Activation. The installation of the pyramid in Piazza Vecchia invites us to reflect on climate change, stimulates social interaction and encourages a new use of urban spaces.<\/h5>\n

The Masters of Landscape: Landscape Festival 2023 “Grow together” <\/h2>\n

Also for 2023 we could not miss the appointment with “The Masters of the Landscape” held from 7 to 24 September 2023.<\/strong> This year the theme of the Landscape Festival was “Grow Together”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

“Growing together with the landscape, as people, as a community, as humanity, but also growing together as a city, Bergamo and Brescia. Taking care of the landscape means knowing how to create harmony between the presence of man, architecture and nature.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Landscape Festival 2023 was part of the “Bergamo Brescia Italian Capital of Culture 2023”<\/strong> program, as a reference event when it comes to the important themes of landscape and the environment.<\/p>\n

As with the previous edition, we will share with you the most interesting events with a series of articles dedicated to “The Masters of the Landscape”.<\/p>\n

Let’s start with the opening event of the Landscape Festival 2023, the Lectio Magistralis by Martin Rein Cano.<\/p>\n

Who is Martin Rein Cano? What was his plan for the Landscape Festival 2023?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Martin Rein Cano and the 4 cornerstones of the project<\/span><\/h2>\n

On 7 September in upper Bergamo, the Lectio Magistralis by Martin Rein Cano was held who, before describing the reasons behind the installation of the pyramid in Piazza Vecchia, talked about the projects he tackled with his Topotek1 working group.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year the Bergamo Alta project brings to the streets an installation that arises from a previous one presented in Milan during the Design Week.<\/p>\n

To explain the “sculpture” of Piazza Vecchia, the architect Rein Cano decided to start from his own work alongside the Topotek1 group founded in 1996 in Berlin with the aim of following the spirit of the time (zeitgeist) in the project.<\/p>\n

In recent years, reflections have revolved around, for example, climate change, Covid, immigration and more, including all of this in their projects.<\/p>\n

A new term with which they had to deal was “green washing”, that is, the practice whereby the problem of sustainability is addressed only on the surface with palliative solutions that in reality solve nothing.<\/p>\n

Lectio Magistralis 2023: The four pairs of themes addressed by Martin Rein Cano<\/h2>\n

The first pair of themes is composed of Contextualization<\/strong> and Resonance<\/strong>. Bringing the theme of climate change into the present by making it resonate in projects from the past to the present.<\/p>\n

The second is formed by Identity<\/strong> and Narrative<\/strong>, where the identity of a place has become a continuously evolving concept. It is no longer a fixed element, but depends on who lives there: religion, culture, origins, in short, new projects for a new way of living.<\/p>\n

The third includes Sustainability<\/strong> and the Program<\/strong> which include not only electric cars or the planting of new plants, but also and above all long-term planning: foresight.<\/p>\n

The fourth and final thematic pair concerns Temporality<\/strong> and Activation<\/strong>, which have a lot to do with the pyramid built in the old square. Martin Rein Cano admits that they were a bit of a terrorist by proposing an element of rupture with the surrounding world, a bomb to light the fuse of curiosity for the climate topic.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Martin Rein Cano’s projects: THE LORSCH MONASTERY<\/h2>\n

Martin Rein Cano begins to talk about his works from the Lorsch Monastery which no longer exists, where many of the texts now present in the Vatican library were copied. Having to intervene to make it a public park, they decided to create movements in the ground that would become the imprint of the missing building, thus making its presence felt respectfully. A usable movement, a spatial sculpture.<\/p>\n

Martin Rein Cano’s projects: SUPERKILEN<\/h2>\n

To present the second work he started from afar. Showing nineteenth-century bucolic paintings that were in vogue in England where the architecture that forms the background exists, but each in different places and inserted close together because they are useful to the painter’s imagination. Even English gardens welcomed architecture and plants that were not part of English history but represented a “whim”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The design reality of these paintings, created to give beauty to a room, plays freely with the manipulated reality, when necessary. Whoever inserts these elements is a “traitor” of the original, but also remains faithful to his design freedom which allows him to play with the copy.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is how the Copenhagen public park project was approached Superkilen<\/u><\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The residents<\/h5>\n

They entered a competition and won.<\/span><\/p>\n

The residents of this place were involved in the planning by proposing objects from their own culture which were then copied or taken from the original place and inserted into the park. Even the plants are not native but inserted based on suggestions – and not only. In this way the designers also developed the underlying theme of the actual project.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Identity<\/h5>\n

Above and beyond enjoyment, one perceives, first of all, by experiencing it, its identity and this is hyper-real because it is full of references to other cultures, to other places, to other lives and times and stories. <\/span><\/p>\n

They are all here, all together at the same time, but this is stimulating and allows all the ethnic groups that live in that area to feel at home, in an old house but also in a new house that includes them and also the others, their stories . <\/span><\/p>\n

This facilitates the lack of conflicts, pacifying: remove the ethnic groups, put the human group.<\/span><\/p>\n

The music<\/h5>\n

A series of speakers is connected to an app that allows the loading of music which will be played in these speakers but at a controlled volume: noise is allowed, but controlled.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ring welcomes the fight, but it is controlled. Violence is “allowed”, but kept under control. A peaceful place but not in Danish terms of total pacification. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here we use appeasement which contains a certain amount of violence which is not a Danish concept.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fundamental themes for Martin Rein Cano: Sustainability and program<\/h3>\n

Things don’t stop. Used things should be thrown away when finished. We have to think about what will happen to them. You need to have a double schedule, an initial and a final one.<\/p>\n

The rainwater that falls in the city does not travel properly underground because the surface layer is waterproof. The water immediately ends up in the drains and in the sea.<\/p>\n

We need to slow this flow so that the water is used below the surface without percolating away unnecessarily.<\/p>\n

Martin Rein Cano’s projects: DOWNTOWN HOJE TAASTRUP<\/h2>\n

In the project for a public park south of Copenhagen: \u201cDowntown hoje taastrup<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u201d they built a depression useful for the game, but designed to receive rainwater and send it to natural filters to then take the right underground path before reaching the sea. A path that allows the plants present in that area to be used even after it has fallen.<\/p>\n

Martin Rein Cano’s projects: PALACE DEL L\u2019EUROPE<\/h2>\n

Speaking of the desire not to want to correct a place subjected to intervention, let’s talk about the project \u201cPalace del l\u2019Europe<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u201d in Luxembourg. A place that had already been designed, but no longer corresponded to today’s needs. Thinking precisely about this concept of time passing and with it changing needs, they decided to make a transitional project by inserting a wooden stage that invited action and they thought of a program that would attract people. An initiative that would bring people back to that place as it is not frequented by those who work in the buildings overlooking the square. In fact, employees used the canteens inside the buildings. Topotek1 has activated the Food-Track Festival.<\/p>\n

To talk about Temporality <\/strong>and Activation <\/strong>we refer again to the project mentioned immediately above where the intervention was not above all of a planning type but of an ideational, creative and transversal type to its role.<\/p>\n

Events such as, for example in Italy, the Venice Biennale or the Salone del Mobile in Milan, can be excellent opportunities to experiment with people. To test ideas and see if project actions are successful.<\/p>\n

Martin Rein Cano’s projects: MYRIAD<\/h2>\n

With this premise, Martin Rein Cano talks to us about Myriad<\/a>, a project he realized with his ex-composer wife.<\/p>\n

Martin Rein Cano’s projects: THE PYRAMID OF PIAZZA VECCHIA<\/h2>\n

By recounting his and their work he comes to talk about Bergamo and the installation in Piazza Vecchia.<\/p>\n

Starting from the data of climate change which caused 18 thousand victims in Italy alone in 2022 and 61 thousand in Europe, the architect claims that the first thing is to plant trees in the city. We now know that this lowers the city’s temperatures.<\/p>\n

This structure came first at the Milan furniture fair. People were able to purchase plants to replant wherever they wanted. This activates climate awareness even in children who will be able to see those plants grow.<\/p>\n

Anche per il 2023 non potevamo mancare all'appuntamento con \"I Maestri del Paesaggio\" tenutosi dal 7 al 24 settembre 2023<\/strong>. Quest'anno il tema del Landscape Festival \u00e8 stato \"Grow Together - Crescere Insieme\".<\/strong><\/p>

\"Crescere insieme al paesaggio, come persone, come comunit\u00e0, come umanit\u00e0, ma anche crescere insieme come citt\u00e0, Bergamo e Brescia. Prendersi cura del paesaggio significa saper creare armonia tra la presenza dell\u2019uomo, dell\u2019architettura e della natura.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>

Il Landscape Festival 2023 ha fatto parte del programma \"Bergamo Brescia Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2023\"<\/strong>, come evento di rifermento per quando riguarda gli importanti temi del paesaggio e dell'ambiente.<\/p>

Come per l'edizione precedente condivideremo con voi gli appuntamenti pi\u00f9 interessanti con una serie di articoli dedicati appunto a \"I Maestri del Paesaggio\".<\/p>

Partiamo quindi con l'evento di apertura del Landscape Festival 2023, la Lectio Magistralis di Martin Rein Cano.<\/p>

Chi \u00e8 Martin Rein Cano? Qual \u00e8 stato il suo progetto per il Landscape Festival 2023?<\/p><\/blockquote>

Martin Rein Cano ed i 4 cardini del progetto<\/span><\/h2>

Il 7 settembre a Bergamo alta si \u00e8 tenuta la Lectio Magistralis di Martin Rein Cano che, prima di raccontare le motivazioni dell\u2019installazione della piramide in Piazza Vecchia, ha raccontato i progetti che ha affrontato con il suo gruppo di lavoro Topotek1.<\/strong><\/p>

Quest\u2019anno il progetto di Bergamo Alta porta in piazza un\u2019installazione che nasce da una precedente presentata a Milano durante la Design Week.<\/p>

L\u2019architetto Rein Cano, per spiegare la \u201cscultura\u201d di piazza vecchia ha deciso di partire dal proprio lavoro accanto al gruppo appunto Topotek1 fondato nel 1996 a Berlino con lo scopo di seguire lo spirito del tempo (zeitgeist) nel progetto.<\/p>

Negli ultimi anni le riflessioni sono ruotate intorno ad esempio al cambiamento climatico, al covid, all\u2019immigrazione e non solo, inserendo tutto questo nei loro progetti.<\/p>

Un nuovo termine con il quale hanno dovuto confrontarsi \u00e8 stato il \u201cgreen washing\u201d e cio\u00e8 quella pratica per cui si affronta il problema della sostenibilit\u00e0 solo in superficie con soluzioni palliative che in realt\u00e0 non risolvono nulla.<\/p>

Lectio Magistralis 2023: Le quattro coppie di temi affrontate da Martin Rein Cano<\/h2>

La prima coppia di tematiche \u00e8 composta da Contestualizzazione e <\/strong>Risonanza. <\/strong>Portare nel presente il tema del cambiamento climatico facendolo risuonare nei progetti dal passato al presente.<\/p>

La seconda \u00e8 formata dall\u2019Identit\u00e0 <\/strong>e la Narrativa, <\/strong>dove l\u2019identit\u00e0 di un luogo \u00e8 divenuto un concetto in continua evoluzione. Non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 un elemento fisso, ma dipende da chi vi abita: religione, cultura, origini, insomma nuovi progetti per un nuovo abitare.<\/p>

La terza comprende la Sostenibilit\u00e0 <\/strong>e il Programma<\/strong> che prevedono non solo le macchine elettriche o il piantare nuove piante, ma anche e soprattutto una programmazione a lungo termine: la lungimiranza.<\/p>

La quarta ed ultima coppia tematica riguarda la Temporalit\u00e0 <\/strong>e l\u2019Attivazione<\/strong>, che molto hanno a che fare con la piramide costruita in piazza vecchia. Martin Rein Cano ammette che sono stati un po\u2019 terroristi proponendo un elemento di rottura con l\u2019intorno, una bomba per accendere la miccia della curiosit\u00e0 per l\u2019argomento climatico.<\/p>

I progetti di Martin Rein Cano:\u00a0IL MONASTERO DI LORSCH<\/h2>

Martin Rein Cano inizia a parlare dei propri lavori dal Monastero di Lorsch oggi non pi\u00f9 esistente, dove furono copiati molti dei testi ora presenti nella biblioteca del Vaticano. Dovendo intervenite per farne un parco pubblico, hanno deciso di creare dei movimenti del terreno che diventassero impronta dell\u2019edificio scomparso facendone sentire cos\u00ec rispettosamente la presenza. Un movimento fruibile, una scultura spaziale.<\/p>

I progetti di Martin Rein Cano: SUPERKILEN<\/h2>

Per presentare il secondo lavoro \u00e8 partito da lontano. Mostrando dei quadri bucolici ottocenteschi che andavano in voga in Inghilterra dove le architetture che fanno da sfondo sono esistenti, ma ognuna in luoghi diversi ed inserite vicine perch\u00e9 utili alla fantasia del pittore. Anche i giardini inglesi accoglievano architetture e piante che non facevano parte della storia inglese ma rappresentavano un \u201ccapriccio\u201d.<\/span><\/p>

La realt\u00e0 progettuale quindi di questi quadri, creati per dare bellezza ad una stanza, giocano liberamente con la realt\u00e0 manipolata, quando necessario. Chi inserisce quindi questi elementi \u00e8 un \u201ctraditore\u201d dell\u2019originale, ma rimane anche aderente alla sua libert\u00e0 progettuale che gli permette di giocare con la copia.<\/span><\/p>

Questo \u00e8 il modo in cui \u00e8 stato affrontato il progetto del parco pubblico di Copenhagen Superkilen<\/u><\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Hanno partecipato ad un concorso ed hanno vinto.<\/span><\/p>

I residenti di questo luogo sono stati coinvolti nella progettazione proponendo oggetti della propria cultura che poi sono stati copiati o presi dal luogo originale ed inseriti nel parco. Anche le piante non sono autoctone ma inserite in base ai suggerimenti \u2013 e non solo. In questo modo i progettisti hanno sviluppato anche il filo conduttore del vero e proprio progetto.<\/span><\/p>

Al di sopra della fruizione si percepisce prima di tutto, vivendolo, la sua identit\u00e0 e questa \u00e8 iper-reale perch\u00e9 piena di richiami ad altre culture, ad altri luoghi, ad altre vite e tempi e storie. <\/span><\/p>

Tutte sono qui, tutte insieme nello stesso momento, per\u00f2 questo \u00e8 stimolante e permette a tutte le etnie che abitano quella zona di sentirsi a casa, in una vecchia casa ma anche in una nuova casa che comprende loro e anche gli altri, le loro storie. <\/span><\/p>

Questo agevola la mancanza di conflitti, pacificare: togliere i gruppi etnici, mettere il gruppo umani.<\/span><\/p>

Una serie di casse acustiche \u00e8 collegata ad un\u2019app che permette il caricamento di musica la quale verr\u00e0 passata in queste casse ma a volume calmierato: il rumore \u00e8 permesso, ma controllato.<\/span><\/p>

Il ring accoglie la lotta, ma questa \u00e8 controllata. La violenza viene \u201cpermessa\u201d, ma tenuta sotto controllo. Un luogo pacificato ma non in termini danesi di pacificazione totale. <\/span><\/p>

Qui si usa una pacificazione che contiene una certa dose di violenza che non \u00e8 un concetto danese.<\/span><\/p>

I progetti di Martin Rein Cano: DOWNTOWN HOJE TAASTRUP<\/h2>

Nel progetto di un parco pubblico a sud di Copenhagen: \u201cDowntown hoje taastrup<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u201d hanno costruito una depressione utile al gioco, ma pensata per accogliere le acque piovane e inviarle ai filtri naturali per poi fare il giusto percorso sotterraneo prima di arrivare ai mari. Un percorso che permetta la fruizione da parte delle piante presenti in quell\u2019area anche dopo che \u00e8 caduta.<\/p>

I progetti di Martin Rein Cano: PALACE DEL L\u2019EUROPE<\/h2>

A proposito del desiderio di non voler correggere un luogo sottoposto ad intervento parliamo del progetto \u201cPalace del l\u2019Europe<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u201d in Lussemburgo. Un luogo che era gi\u00e0 stato progettato, ma non corrispondeva pi\u00f9 alle necessit\u00e0 odierne. Pensando proprio a questo concetto del tempo che passa e con lui le necessit\u00e0 che cambiano, hanno deciso di fare un progetto transitorio inserendo un palco di legno che invitasse all\u2019azione ed hanno pensato ad una programmazione che richiamasse gente. Un\u2019iniziativa che riportasse le persone in quel luogo essendo questo non frequentato da chi lavora negli edifici che si affacciano sulla piazza. I dipendenti infatti utilizzavano le mense interne agli edifici. Topotek1 ha attivato il Festival del food-track.<\/p>

Per parlare della Temporalit\u00e0 <\/strong>e dell\u2019Attivazione <\/strong>ci rifacciamo ancora al progetto citato subito sopra dove l\u2019intervento non \u00e8 stato soprattutto di tipo progettuale ma di tipo ideativo, creativo e trasversale al proprio ruolo.<\/p>

Eventi come, ad esempio in Italia, la Biennale di Venezia o il Salone del Mobile di Milano, possono essere ottime occasioni per fare degli esperimenti con le persone. Per testare idee e per vedere se delle azioni progettuali hanno successo.<\/p>

I progetti di Martin Rein Cano: MYRIAD<\/h2>

Con questa premessa Martin Rein Cano ci parla di Myriad<\/a>, un progetto che ha concretizzato con l\u2019ex moglie compositrice.<\/p>

Questo progetto \u00e8 una parete su cui sono montati degli elementi musicali attivabili dal pubblico. Questa installazione \u00e8 una parete, montata in varie parti del mondo in vari edifici come biblioteche, mostre, gallerie e un museo dei media. L\u2019interazione, la portabilit\u00e0, l\u2019utilizzo da parte di grandi e piccoli \u00e8 quello che volevano.<\/p>

Per loro \u00e8 importante che le esperienze che creano siano intellettuali, ma aperte al grande pubblico di tutte le et\u00e0.<\/p>

I progetti di Martin Rein Cano: LA PIRAMIDE DI PIAZZA VECCHIA<\/h2>

Raccontando il suo ed il loro lavoro giunge a parlare di Bergamo e dell\u2019installazione di piazza vecchia.<\/p>

Partendo dai dati del cambiamento climatico che solo in Italia ha fatto nel 2022 18 mila vittime e 61 mila in Europa, l\u2019architetto sostiene che la prima cosa \u00e8 piantare gli alberi in citt\u00e0. Ormai sappiamo che questo abbassa le temperature della citt\u00e0.<\/p>

Prima \u00e8 venuta la struttura al salone del mobile di Milano. Le persone hanno potuto acquistare delle piante da ripiantare dove volevano. Questo attiva la coscienza climatica anche nei bambini che potranno veder crescere quelle piante.<\/p>

La versione piramidale di Bergamo permette di prendere le piante ma anche, a differenza di quella milanese, di sedersi sui gradini una volta vendute le piante senza la necessit\u00e0 di spendere soldi.<\/p>

Martin Rein Cano sostiene infatti che questa piazza non \u00e8 sociale, cio\u00e8 al servizio delle persone. In questa piazza infatti non ci sono panchine. Inoltre si pu\u00f2 salire sulla piramide per vedere gli scorci ed i palazzi da un\u2019altra angolazione.<\/p>

I bergamaschi sono rimasti giustamente sorpresi da questa installazione: copre gli edifici, inghiottisce la bellissima fontana, si vede la struttura.<\/p>

Questa volta bisogna andare oltre:<\/p>

potrete portarvi via una pianta dei Vivai Guagno<\/a> che \u00e8 un sicuro investimento \u2013 vista la seriet\u00e0 del vivaio.<\/p>

Potrete sedervi sugli spalti della piramide ammirando la piazza dal centro e gratuitamente.<\/p>

Potrete arrampicarvi sulla piramide ed ammirare le facciate dei palazzi dall\u2019alto forse per l\u2019unica volta in vita vostra.<\/p>
