Professor Remorini, during a seminar promoted in Arezzo, explored the importance of urban greenery and climate change. He illustrated the physical, psychological and economic benefits of green spaces, highlighting international good practices (Paris, Rotterdam, Barcelona). He also criticized greenwashing and underlined the need to properly manage plants and spaces to create resilient cities. Environmental education and conscious design are essential for a sustainable future.<\/h5>\n

Urban greenery and climate change: Remorini speaks<\/h2>\n

In the increasingly urban context of our lives, the presence of green spaces plays a crucial role in the quality of our existence.<\/p>\n

The Order of Agronomists and Forestry Doctors of Arezzo, in collaboration with the Professional College of Agricultural Experts of Siena, Arezzo and Florence and with the national trade association of psychologists presented, in mid-September, the seminar entitled:<\/p>\n

Urban Green: are you sure it’s only GREEN?<\/strong>
Green is not just a color: the biological, psychological and social effects of living in areas with a high density of urban nature.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is meant by Urban Green? How is urban greenery classified? How does climate change affect urban greenery? How much urban greenery per inhabitant?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With Professor Remorini, from the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Pisa, we open the series of articles dedicated to the conference: Urban Green: are you sure it is only Green?<\/strong> A simple approach to understand yet full of complexity and knowledge of the topic.<\/p>\n

Remorini speaks<\/h3>\n

First a fact: in 2007 it happened that the people who live in the city exceeded those who live outside the city. In 2021 it was 60% and it is estimated that this value will grow further.<\/p>\n

A second fact to start from is that after 2000 we began to talk about ecosystem services as those multiple benefits provided by ecosystems to mankind.<\/p>\n

What are the benefits of urban greenery?<\/h3>\n

Among the physical benefits, probably one of the most important is the improvement of the microclimate. In our cities we are witnessing the heat island phenomenon: built<\/strong> = higher temperatures green<\/strong> = lower temperatures<\/p>\n

The contribution of greenery, and of trees in particular, to the mitigation of the heat island is primarily due to the transpiration of water from the leaves which, passing from the liquid to the gaseous state, absorbs heat from the environment, cooling the air.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the direct shading of trees on buildings allows the temperature of the latter to be reduced by up to 10-15 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Then it is known that the presence of greenery improves air quality because plants absorb not only CO2<\/sub> but also particulates and heavy metals.<\/p>\n

Does it matter how the tree is managed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

However, the absorption of CO2<\/sub> depends greatly on how the tree is cultivated and managed and on the pedoclimatic conditions in which it lives.<\/p>\n

Among the economic benefits there is the increase in value for apartments located near parks or green spaces and the lower expense for heating and air conditioning linked to the mitigation of heat in the presence of plants.<\/p>\n

The recreational and social functions of greenery bring leisure and aggregation for people and animals which therefore bring us physical and psychological benefits<\/p>\n

And how does urban greenery influence the field of health?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are dozens of studies by doctors regarding the contribution that the use of greenery, and sometimes even just the sight of greenery, provides to many human physiological parameters and to the treatment of many pathologies.<\/p>\n

The designer of Central Park, Olmstead in 1800, already invited the population to frequent the park to improve their lives.<\/p>\n

The conservation of biodiversity and the importance of ecological corridors along the edges of crops are another advantage.<\/p>\n

Environmental education of children sensitizes them to the cultivation of curiosity and therefore respect towards nature.<\/p>\n

Urban greenery and climate change: The resilient city<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What is resilience? It is the ability of a material to resist dynamic stress without breaking.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The resilient city resists climate change. For example, in Paris the current mayor has opened school gardens to the population, implementing services and replacing asphalt with permeable materials and transforming unused car parks into small gardens (they had previously strengthened public services making cars less desirable).<\/p>\n

The example of Rotterdam<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Rotterdam they decided to focus the green evolution on the GREEN use of roofs. Having many roofs at their disposal, one square kilometer in the center alone, they have developed four types, greenery, recovery of meteorological water, social spaces and solar panels. You can also go from one to the other at altitude.<\/p>\n

Barcellona<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Barcelona, \u200b\u200ba city that has the problem of water bombs, they have decided to use already tested Rain Garden systems, that water drainage system that absorbs excess water in the city by channeling it into large tanks that allow it to be reused in a second moment.<\/p>\n

They have experimented with these underground drainage systems in some pilot areas and given the excellent results they have made their implementation mandatory in road redevelopments<\/p>\n

Furthermore, they decided that biodiversity needed to be preserved and inserted plants in every available space that allowed the presence of useful insects after a study in collaboration with the University. <\/p>\n

How did the citizens react?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It is interesting to note that the population, not informed of these decisions, protested this different management, thinking they would forget to cut the lawn. The municipality therefore decided to activate an information campaign that would explain to citizens why.<\/p>\n

When choosing new plants planted, or when replacing those that have been removed, you must be careful about the “exotic\/allochthonous” plants (in the sense of non-native) that are inserted. In fact, these must not be invasive.<\/p>\n

The use of exotic (but never invasive!) plants can however be a strategy to use in some cases as these can adapt better than many native plants to the changed conditions caused by climate change<\/p>\n

Arezzo itself, as a consequence of these reasonings, is trying to draw up a list of alien plants to evaluate their presence.<\/p>\n

Greenwashing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some newspapers write that to cure the world from climate change, 1000 billion trees should be planted.<\/p>\n

By making a simple calculation of the space necessary to grow such a quantity of trees, so that they can carry out the task we ask of them, it highlights that almost 70% of the emerged land would be needed!<\/p>\n

According to other studies, doubling the existing spaces dedicated to planting would solve the problem. Well it wouldn’t even be enough to triple them.<\/p>\n

These theories therefore seem, more than anything else, to be a phenomenon of Greenwashing, that is, the method that sends house dust under the carpet and not into the dustbin.<\/p>\n

Verde urbano e cambiamento climatico: Parla Remorini<\/h2>

Nel contesto sempre pi\u00f9 urbano delle nostre vite, la presenza di spazi verdi assume un ruolo cruciale nella qualit\u00e0 della nostra esistenza.<\/p>

L\u2019Ordine dei Dottori Agronomi e Forestali di Arezzo, in collaborazione con il Collegio Professionale dei Periti Agrari di Siena, Arezzo e Firenze e con l\u2019associazione nazionale di categoria degli psicologi ha presentato, a met\u00e0 settembre, il seminario dal titolo:<\/p>

Il Verde non \u00e8 solo un colore: gli effetti biologici, psicologici e sociali del vivere in aree con alta densit\u00e0 di natura urbana.<\/strong><\/p>

Cosa si intende per Verde Urbano? Come viene classificato il verde urbano? Come influisce il cambiamento climatico sul verde urbano? Quanto verde urbano per abitante?<\/p><\/blockquote>

Con il Professor Remorini, del Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Pisa, apriamo la serie di articoli dedicati al convegno: Verde Urbano: sicuri sia solamente Verde?<\/strong> Un approccio semplice da capire eppure pieno di complessit\u00e0 e conoscenza dell\u2019argomento.<\/p>

Parla Remorini<\/h3>

Prima un dato: nel 2007 \u00e8 accaduto che le persone che abitano in citt\u00e0 abbiano superato quelle che abitano fuori citt\u00e0. Nel 2021 era il 60% e si stima che questo valore crescer\u00e0 ulteriormente.<\/p>

Un secondo dato da cui partire \u00e8 che dopo il 2000 si \u00e8 cominciato a parlare di servizi ecosistemici come quei benefici multipli forniti dagli ecosistemi al genere umano.<\/p>

Quali sono i benefici del verde urbano?<\/h3>

Tra i benefici fisici probabilmente uno dei pi\u00f9 importanti \u00e8 il miglioramento del microclima. Nelle nostre citt\u00e0 si assiste al fenomeno dell\u2019isola di calore: costruito<\/strong>=temperature pi\u00f9 alte verde<\/strong>=temperature pi\u00f9 basse<\/p>

Il contributo del verde, e degli alberi in particolare, alla mitigazione dell'isola di calore \u00e8 dovuto innanzitutto dalla traspirazione dell'acqua dalle foglie che, passando dallo stato liquido a quello gassoso, assorbe calore dall'ambiente raffreddando l'aria.<\/p>

Inoltre l'ombreggiamento diretto degli alberi sugli edifici permette di ridurre la temperatura di questi ultimi fino a 10-15 \u00b0C.<\/p>

Poi si sa che la presenza del verde migliora la qualit\u00e0 dell\u2019aria perch\u00e9 le piante assorbono non solo la CO2<\/sub> ma anche i particolati e i metalli pesanti.<\/p>

Conta come viene gestito l\u2019albero?<\/strong><\/h3>

L\u2019assorbimento della CO2<\/sub> per\u00f2 dipende molto da come l\u2019albero \u00e8 coltivato e gestito e dalle condizioni pedoclimatiche in cui si trova a vivere.<\/p>

Tra i benefici economici c\u2019\u00e8 l\u2019aumento di valore per gli appartamenti posizionati vicino a parchi o spazi verdi e la minor spesa per riscaldamento e condizionamento legata alla mitigazione del calore in presenza di piante.<\/p>

Le funzioni ricreative e sociali del verde portano svago e aggregazione per persone e animali che ci portano quindi benefici fisici e psicologici<\/p>

E nel campo della salute come influisce il verde urbano?<\/strong><\/h3>

Ci sono decine di ricerche da parte dei medici riguardo al contributo che la fruizione del verde, e talvolta anche la sola visione del verde, fornisce nei confronti di molti parametri fisiologici dell'uomo e nella cura di molte patologie.<\/p>

Il progettista di Central Park, Olmstead nell\u20191800, gi\u00e0 invitava la popolazione a frequentare il parco per migliorare la propria vita.<\/p>

La conservazione della biodiversit\u00e0 e l\u2019importanza dei corridoi ecologici a margine delle coltivazioni sono un altro vantaggio.<\/p>

L\u2019educazione ambientale dei bambini li sensibilizza alla coltivazione della curiosit\u00e0 e quindi del rispetto nei confronti della natura.<\/p>

La citt\u00e0 resiliente resiste ai cambiamenti climatici. Ad esempio a Parigi l\u2019attuale sindaco ha aperto i giardini scolastici alla popolazione, implementandone i servizi e sostituendo l\u2019asfalto con materiali permeabili e trasformando i parcheggi non utilizzati in piccoli giardini (avevano prima potenziato i servizi pubblici rendendo le auto meno desiderabili).<\/p>

Avendo loro molti tetti a disposizione, un chilometro quadrato solo in centro, ne hanno sviluppato quattro tipi, verde, recupero delle acque metereologiche, spazi sociali e pannelli solari. Barcellona<\/strong><\/h3>

A Barcellona, citt\u00e0 che ha il problema delle bombe d\u2019acqua, hanno deciso di utilizzare sistemi gi\u00e0 collaudati di Rain Garden, quel sistema di drenaggio delle acque che assorbe l\u2019acqua in eccesso in citt\u00e0 convogliandola in grosse cisterne che ne permettono il riutilizzo in un secondo momento.<\/p>

Hanno sperimentato questi sistemi di drenaggio sotterraneo in alcune zone pilota e visti gli ottimi risultati hanno reso la loro realizzazione obbligatoria nelle riqualificazioni stradali<\/p>

Inoltre hanno deciso che andava preservata la biodiversit\u00e0 ed hanno inserito in ogni spazio disponibile piante che permettessero la presenza di insetti utili dopo uno studio in collaborazione con l\u2019Universit\u00e0<\/p>

Come hanno reagito i cittadini?<\/strong><\/h3>

Interessante notare che la popolazione, non informata di queste decisioni, ha protestato per questa diversa gestione, pensando si dimenticassero di tagliare il prato. Il comune quindi ha deciso di attivare una campagna di informazione che spiegasse ai cittadini il perch\u00e9.<\/p>

Nello scegliere le piante nuove messe a dimora, o per le sostituzioni di quelle che sono state rimosse, si deve stare attenti alle piante \u201cesotiche\/alloctone\u201d (nel senso di non autoctone) che si inseriscono. Queste, infatti, non devono essere invasive.<\/p>

L'utilizzo di piante esotiche (ma mai invasive!) pu\u00f2 tuttavia essere una strategia da utilizzare in alcuni casi poich\u00e9 queste si possono adattare meglio di molte autoctone alle mutate condizioni causate dai cambiamenti climatici<\/p>

Il Greenwashing<\/strong><\/h3>

Alcuni giornali scrivono che per curare il mondo dal cambiamento climatico si dovrebbero piantare 1000 miliardi di alberi.<\/p>

Facendo Un semplice calcolo dello spazio necessario per far crescere una tale quantit\u00e0 di alberi, affinch\u00e9 possano svolgere il compito che chiediamo loro, evidenzia che servirebbero quasi il 70% delle terre emerse!<\/p>

Secondo altri studi, raddoppiare gli spazi esistenti dedicati alla piantumazione, risolverebbe il problema. Beh non basterebbe neanche triplicarli.<\/p>

Queste teorie sembrano quindi, pi\u00f9 che altro, un fenomeno di Greenwashing cio\u00e8 quel metodo che spedisce la polvere di casa sotto il tappeto e non nella pattumiera.<\/p>

Mostra come la stessa pianta in ambiente urbano e rurale abbia uno sviluppo diverso ed un\u2019aspettativa di vita diversa per lo stress ed il contenuto sviluppo a cui \u00e8 sottoposta. Bisogna quindi fare attenzione a creare le condizioni migliori in cui la pianta possa svilupparsi.<\/strong><\/p>
