Kew Gardens, created in 1759 by Princess Augusta, is home to historic glasshouses designed by Burton and Chambers, influenced by naval and Chinese architecture. It also includes modern glasshouses, such as the Princess of Wales Conservatory, and unique botanical spaces. It is home to Japanese structures, biodiversity studies and period architecture. Kew is a centre of research and natural beauty that also offers restaurants, shops and botanical exhibitions.<\/h5>\n

Kew Gardens: a bit of history<\/h2>\n

The first nine acres of Kew Gardens were born in 1759 at the behest of Princess Augusta, mother of King George III and are located just outside London. Reachable by subway!<\/p>\n

Older than the park was already the Kew Palace, from 1631, which today can be visited and takes the visitor to the aristocratic rooms of the 1600s.<\/p>\n

The first projects were by the then very famous Decimus Burton and William Chambers.<\/p>\n

Decimus Burton, <\/strong> a very prolific Victorian architect and landscape architect both in England and abroad, he is not a well-known designer, although many of his works are still visible in important parks in London and beyond.<\/p>\n

In Kew Gardens are the Temperate House, the Palm House, the Waterlily House and the Pagoda.<\/p>\n

\n

For the structure he was inspired by shipbuilding architecture. Perhaps this is why the shape resembles the keel of an upturned ship.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

William Chambers<\/strong>, swedish by birth, he first worked in China, absorbing its taste. Then he studied architecture in Paris and Rome, returning to England ready to open his own architecture studio. Reading her story one would like to have a life like hers. <\/p>\n

His taste, influenced by the Chinese one, was very successful at the time, also driving the entire production of his time.<\/p>\n

Let’s take a closer look at some of Kew Gardens’ greenhouses<\/h2>\n

The main greenhouses that can be visited at Kew Gardens are the aforementioned Palm House<\/strong> and  Temperate House<\/strong>, but they are not the only ones in this paradise of over 120 hectares.<\/p>\n

Another large greenhouse, built in modern times, is the one inaugurated by Princess Diana and named after Princess Augusta: il Princess of Wales Conservatory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another small, but no less important greenhouse is the Davies Alpine House<\/strong> which bears the same content in its name.<\/p>\n

\n

These greenhouses are part of a broader research and conservation of seeds with a far-sighted vision of the future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Kew Gardens: The tables of the original projects<\/h2>\n

Wandering around Kew Gardens sites I came across the original project drawings and as an architect (inside & outside) I wanted to save them on my pc. Now I present them to you.<\/p>\n

The ones I have downloaded are more than 40 and they do not just tell what we see, but also the way of thinking of the time regarding the forms, the construction strategy, the distribution of spaces.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

There is a lot to learn from this work. Paxton himself based this work for the Christal Palace di Brighton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The foundations, the opening movements of the windows, the heating methods, the underground rainwater storage tanks: every detail is carefully studied.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Visit to Kew Gardens: What to see and tickets<\/h2>\n

And following such a project, what can Kew Gardens offer besides greenhouses?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Inside you will find a pine forest, woods of Magnolias, Bambu, Azaleas.<\/p>\n

Mediterranean gardens, of Rhododendrons, of the Roses with its pergola, the formal ones of the Queen and the Duke, that of the grass (with more than 500 species of graminaceae and poaceae) two galleries of botanical art, a walk at height in the woods where you they can touch the treetops, two lakes and the water lily pond.<\/p>\n

The Minka House<\/strong>, example of anti-seismic construction made entirely with plants and natural materials that was donated by Japan in 2001 following the Japanese Festival.<\/p>\n

The Imperial Messenger’s Gate<\/strong> which was instead given as a gift after the Japanese-British exhibition in 1910.<\/p>\n

In the height of the temples they have not forgotten to insert a dozen of them including a cottage. Here they study and protect bees, butterflies, birds, mushrooms and Lucanidae (a family of scarabs very common along the Thames River) and if you want to participate in the evolution of the planet you can also donate for research work.<\/p>\n

The Pagoda<\/strong> unfortunately, cannot be visited and 22 years ago it lost all 80 golden dragons that decorated the tips of the roofs and that you can taste in the drawing below, but still today, with its purest Chinese style, popping up among the trees as a surprise, walking around it leaves you breathless.<\/p>\n

When you are dead of fatigue, but happy in your eyes and in your mind, you can drag yourself to two restaurants or, in two cafes & shops where you can spend the remaining budget after paying the ticket, in magnificent souvenirs by Kew Gardens.<\/p>\n

PS: the ticket goes from 11.00 to 21.45 \u00a3 for an adult depending on the period, the advance booking and the donation, but you will find everything on their website kew.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Given the size of the park we recommend the rented go-kart tour. You can first take the train tour, but they don’t let you see everything so consider the train only as the beginning and don’t miss the Treetop Walkway.<\/p>\n

Kew Gardens: un po' di storia<\/h2>\r\n

I primi nove acri dei giardini di Kew nascono nel 1759 per volere della principessa Augusta, madre del Re Giorgio III e si trovano poco fuori Londra. Raggiungibili con la metropolitana!<\/p>\r\n

Pi\u00f9 antica del parco era gi\u00e0 il Kew Palace, del 1631, che oggi si pu\u00f2 visitare e porta il visitatore negli ambienti nobiliari del 1600.<\/p>\r\n

I primi progetti furono degli allora famosissimi Decimus Burton e William Chambers.<\/p>\r\n

Decimus Burton, <\/strong>architetto e paesaggista vittoriano molto prolifico sia in Inghilterra che fuori, non \u00e8 un progettista conosciuto, nonostante siano ancora visibili molte delle sue opere in importanti parchi di Londra e non solo.<\/p>\r\n

Nei Giardini di Kew sono sue la Temperate House, la Palm House, la Waterlily House e la Pagoda.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n

Per la struttura si \u00e8 ispirato all\u2019architettura cantieristica. Forse per questo la forma ricorda la chiglia di una nave capovolta.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

William Chambers<\/strong>, svedese di nascita, ha dapprima lavorato in Cina assorbendone il gusto. Poi ha studiato architettura a Parigi e a Roma tornando in Inghilterra pronto per aprire il suo studio di architettura. Leggendo la sua storia si vorrebbe avere una vita come la sua. <\/p>\r\n

Il suo gusto, influenzato da quello cinese, ha avuto grande successo all\u2019epoca pilotando anche l\u2019intera produzione del suo tempo.<\/p>\r\n

Vediamo pi\u00f9 da vicino alcune serre di Kew Gardens<\/h2>\r\n

Le principali serre visitabili ai giardini di Kew sono le gi\u00e0 citate Palm House<\/strong> e\u00a0 Temperate House<\/strong>, ma non sono le uniche presenti in questo paradiso di oltre 120 ettari.<\/p>\r\n

Un\u2019altra grande serra, costruita in tempi moderni, \u00e8 quella inaugurata dalla Principessa Diana ed intitolata alla Principessa Augusta: il Princess of Wales Conservatory.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Un\u2019altra piccola, ma non meno importante serra \u00e8 la Davies Alpine House<\/strong> che nel nome porta il suo stesso contenuto.<\/p>\r\n

Queste serre si inseriscono in un pi\u00f9 ampio lavoro di ricerca e di conservazione dei semi con una visione lungimirante sul futuro.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Kew Gardens: Le tavole dei progetti originali<\/h2>\r\n

Gironzolando per siti riguardanti Kew Gardens mi sono imbattuta nelle tavole di progetto originali e da architetto (inside & outside) ho desiderato salvarle sul mio pc. Ora ve le presento.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n

Quelle che ho scaricato sono pi\u00f9 di 40 e non raccontano solo ci\u00f2 che vediamo, ma anche il modo di pensare dell\u2019epoca riguardo alle forme, alla strategia costruttiva, alla distribuzione degli spazi.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

C\u2019\u00e8 molto da imparare da quest\u2019opera. Paxton stesso si bas\u00f2 su questo lavoro per il Christal Palace di Brighton<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

Visita ai Kew Gardens: Cosa vedere e biglietti<\/h2>\r\n
\r\n

E in seguito ad un progetto cos\u00ec, cosa possono offrire i Kew Gardens oltre alle serre?<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Al suo interno troverete una pineta, boschi di Magnolie, di Bambu, di Azalee.<\/p>\r\n

Giardini mediterranei, di Rododendri, delle Rose con il suo pergolato, quelli formali della Regina e del Duca, quello dell\u2019erba (con pi\u00f9 di 500 specie di graminacee e poacee) due gallerie di arte botanica, una camminata in quota nel bosco dove si possono toccare le cime degli alberi, due laghi ed il laghetto delle ninfee.<\/p>\r\n

La Minka House<\/strong>, esempio di costruzione antisismica realizzata interamente con piante e materiali naturali che fu donata dal Giappone nel 2001 in seguito al Festival Giapponese.<\/p>\r\n

La Porta del Messaggere Imperiale<\/strong> che invece fu regalata dopo l\u2019esposizione Giappo-Britannica del 1910.<\/p>\r\n

In piena epoca dei tempietti non si sono dimenticati di inserirne una decina compreso un cottage. Qui studiano e proteggono api, farfalle, uccelli, funghi e Lucanidi (famiglia degli scarabei molto diffusa lungo il fiume Thames) e se vuoi partecipare all\u2019evoluzione dei pianeta puoi anche donare per il lavoro di ricerca.<\/p>\r\n

La Pagoda<\/strong> purtroppo non \u00e8 visitabile ed ha perso 22 anni fa tutti gli 80 draghi dorati che decoravano le punte dei tetti e che potete gustare nel disegno sotto, ma ancora oggi, con il suo pi\u00f9 puro stile cinese, spuntando tra gli alberi come una sorpresa, passeggiandovi intorno lascia senza fiato.<\/p>\r\n

Quando ormai sarete morti di stanchezza, ma felici negli occhi e nella mente, potrete trascinarvi in due ristoranti oppure, in due caf\u00e8 & Shop dove potrete spendere il budget rimasto dopo il pagamento del biglietto, in magnifici souvenir firmati Kew Gardens.<\/p>\r\n
