What is the use of knowing who they are? Studying the past to do better in the future is one of the lessons that must be acquired. Today more than yesterday, the path they have taken to become who they are is also important.<\/p>\n
If we can take a cue from someone else’s journey, perhaps it will be easier to make even unpopular decisions, thinking that the greats of the past did it before, faced disagreements and designed a new path.<\/p>\n
I expected to find a lot of news about Paolo Pejrone online and about his projects, but there is very little. Although he is recognized as a poet of garden design, little is written about him and very little about his gardens. In part this is certainly due to his shyness as a gardener – as he himself said – and perhaps also to the fact that many of the gardens are private and therefore not very available for expert analysis.<\/p>\n
But also as Guido Giuppini says (in his book The Garden of Misunderstandings<\/u><\/a>) that you will find told in this article<\/u><\/a>,<\/p>\n \u201c[\u2026] One suspects that one of the reasons for the relative backwardness of the historiography of the garden […] depends on having been […] (only) by virtue of the relative survival of the architectural parts, the prerogative of art and architecture historians, inclined to considering the vegetable component of the garden as a simple piece of furniture, and gardening as a matter for gardeners […] Or perhaps in being considered the garden, by inveterate idealistic judgement, as a minor art.\u201d<\/p>\n But we know that it is not a minor art. Mondo del Giardino can rightly define it as the center of its universe.<\/p>\n Why Paolo Pejrone first? Paolo Pejrone is the first modern Italian landscape painter. He studied first with Russel Page and then with Roberto Burle Marks \u2013 we could say the devil and the holy water of world landscaping. From how he himself talks about it, it would seem that he was attracted by the figure of Burle Marks precisely because Russell Page considered nature too prone to his will. In fact, the second taught him that nature can be disobedient by closing the harmonic circle of the teachings received.<\/p>\n On the AIAPP website you will find an exhaustive presentation of the life of Paolo Pejrone, so we will proceed on another channel: that of the direct story.<\/p>\n They tell us that “[…] he graduated with great boredom and with great difficulty in Architecture at the Turin Polytechnic […]” and he adds “To become a gardener I had to become an architect so as not to be kicked.”<\/p>\n At the time he certainly didn’t want to do architecture, but then this information remained fundamental for the organized perception of space.<\/p>\n He says \u201c[\u2026] I was five or six years old, the war had just ended, I remember very well the day when Giovanni and Maria (the gardeners of the estate) gave me a small strip of land from the huge family garden to work [\u2026] Initially I was given two or three rows of lettuce to transplant and later some onion seedlings [che] in the summer they grow visibly and in this way I had the first satisfactions […]\u201d (Il vero giardiniere non si arrende \u2013 Paolo Pejrone 2003)<\/p>\n \u201cOn 8 January 1970 (he was 29 years old), while passing through Turin where he was working on the Frescot garden, blocked by a copious mid-January snowfall, Russell Page found himself having a few hours free: he received me at the end of a a hall immersed in semi-darkness. A fireplace illuminated the atmosphere with its warmth and light\u201d thus began the apprenticeship with the great gardener.<\/p>\n He tells us \u201c[\u2026] In England, from Russell Page, I learned the great aristocratic formal quality of the garden. I later learned of Burle Marx, great-grandson of Karl Marx, who represented (instead) the revolution. When I told Russell I was going to work at Burle Marx he told me what you going to do at those buggers. But I was drawn to it. With him I learned to break the mold. To understand that plants could be untamed and not just tamed. A window of great oxygen.<\/p>\n Then I returned to Italy to put into practice what I had learned: a disaster.<\/p>\n My dad used to say: he’s an architect and doesn’t want to use bricks.<\/p>\n Then someone was reckless trusting me and I humbly made myself available.\u201d<\/p>\n How many of us still face a parent or work situation today where the greatness of this work is not recognized. Paolo Pejrone also had these problems but he didn’t give up. He believed in the teachings received (and in himself)<\/p>\n \u201cI have never been a theorist and I have not tried to be. Turin had a history of public gardens with a mayor who built them because he was better than the gardeners. The public garden is very different from the private garden. Two worlds that can oppose each other. Nonostante venga riconosciuto come un vate della progettazione dei giardini, su di lui \u00e8 scritto poco e sui suoi giardini pochissimo. In parte questo \u00e8 sicuramente dovuto alla sua timidezza di giardiniere - come da lui stesso detto - e forse anche dal fatto che molti dei giardini sono privati e quindi poco disponibili per le analisi degli esperti.<\/p>\r\n Come dice Guido Giuppini (nel suo libro Il giardino degli equivoci<\/u><\/a>) che trovate raccontato in questo articolo<\/u><\/a>: \u201c[\u2026] Viene il sospetto che una delle ragioni della relativa arretratezza della storiografia del giardino [\u2026] dipenda dall\u2019essere stata [\u2026] (solo) in virt\u00f9 della relativa sopravvivenza delle parti architettoniche, appannaggio degli storici dell\u2019arte e dell\u2019architettura, propensi a considerare la componente vegetale del giardino come un semplice arredo, e il giardinaggio una faccenda da ortolani [\u2026] O forse nell\u2019essere considerato il giardino, per inveterato giudizio idealistico, come un\u2019arte minore.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n Ma noi sappiamo che non \u00e8 un\u2019arte minore. Mondo del giardino la pu\u00f2 definire, a ragione, il centro del proprio universo.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n \u00a0<\/p>\r\n Paolo Pejrone \u00e8 il primo paesaggista italiano moderno. Studia prima con Russel Page e poi con Roberto Burle Marks - potremmo dire il diavolo e l\u2019acqua santa del paesaggismo mondiale. Da come lui stesso ne parla sembrerebbe che fosse attirato dalla figura di Burle Marks proprio perch\u00e9 Russell Page considerasse la natura troppo prona al proprio volere. Infatti il secondo gli ha insegnato che la natura pu\u00f2 essere disobbediente chiudendo il cerchio armonico degli insegnamenti ricevuti.<\/p>\r\n Sul sito dell\u2019AIAPP trovate un\u2019esaustiva presentazione del curriculum professionale di Paolo Pejrone, per cui noi procederemo su un altro canale: quello del racconto diretto.<\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/p>\r\n Ci raccontano che \u201c[\u2026] si laurea con grande noia e molta difficolt\u00e0 in Architettura al Politecnico di Torino [\u2026]\u201d<\/em> e lui aggiunge \u201cPer diventare giardiniere ho dovuto diventare architetto per non essere preso a calci.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n All\u2019epoca sicuramente non voleva fare architettura, ma poi queste informazioni sono rimaste fondamentali per la percezione organizzata dello spazio.<\/p>\r\n Racconta \u201c[\u2026] Avevo cinque o sei anni, la guerra era finita da poco, ricordo benissimo il giorno in cui Giovanni e Maria (i giardinieri della tenuta) mi diedero da lavorare un piccolo lembo di terra del grandissimo orto della famiglia [\u2026] Inizialmente mi furono date da trapiantare due o tre file di insalata e dopo alcune piantine di cipolla [che] nel periodo estivo crescono a vista d\u2019occhio e in tal modo ebbi le prime soddisfazioni [\u2026]\u201d<\/em> (Il vero giardiniere non si arrende \u2013 Paolo Pejrone 2003)<\/p>\r\n \"L\u20198 gennaio 1970 (aveva 29 anni), di passaggio a Torino dove si trovava per lavorare al giardino dei Frescot, bloccato da una copiosa nevicata di met\u00e0 gennaio, Russel Page si trov\u00f2 ad avere qualche ora libera: mi ricevette in fondo a un salone immerso nella semioscurit\u00e0. Un caminetto rischiarava l\u2019atmosfera con il suo calore e la sua luce\u201d<\/em> cos\u00ec inizi\u00f2 l\u2019apprendistato con il grande giardiniere.<\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/p>\r\n Ci racconta \u201c[\u2026] In Inghilterra, da Russell Page, ho imparato la grande qualit\u00e0 formale aristocratica del giardino. Ho saputo poi di Burle Marx, pronipote di Karl Marx, che rappresentava (invece) la rivoluzione. Quando ho detto a Russell che andavo a lavorare da Burle Marx mi ha detto cosa vai a fare da quei buzzurri. Ma io ne ero attirato. Con lui ho imparato a rompere gli schemi. A capire che le piante potevano essere indomite e non solo domate. Una finestra di grande ossigeno.<\/em><\/p>\r\n Poi sono tornato in Italia per mettere in pratica quello che avevo imparato: un disastro.<\/em><\/p>\r\n Mio pap\u00e0 diceva: \u00e8 architetto e non vuole usare i mattoni.<\/em><\/p>\r\n Poi qualcuno \u00e8 stato temerario fidandosi di me ed io umilmente mi sono messo a disposizione.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n Quanti di noi affrontano ancora oggi un genitore o una situazione lavorativa dove la grandezza di questo lavoro non viene riconosciuta. \u00a0Anche Paolo Pejrone ha avuto questi problemi, ma non ha mollato. Ha creduto negli insegnamenti ricevuti (e in s\u00e9 stesso)<\/p>\r\n \u201cNon sono mai stato un teorico e non ho cercato di esserlo. Oggi tutte terrazze. Roma diventa l\u2019epicentro della terrazza. Ippolito pizzetti viveva la sua terrazza. Caricava di terra e bagnava e tutto finiva di sotto. Molte cause, molte dismissioni del verde in terrazzo. Poi tornava con la terra in ascensore. Ma sui terrazzi spesso c\u2019\u00e8 molto allestimento e poco giardino. Per seminare ci vogliono i tempi giusti. Bisogna aspettare. Il \u201ctutto e subito\u201d \u00e8 un errore di oggi.<\/p>\r\n Ad esempio Il giardino di Virginia Wolf \u00e8 in stile Bloomsbury \u00e8 hippie ben piantato, frutta e verdura hanno un ruolo pi\u00f9 importante di lavanda e giacinti.<\/p>\r\n Quando una pianta non viene bene, bisogna togliersi di torno le rogne, regalarla alla Rosina, come faceva mia nonna, che le piantava nel giardino della parrocchia e venivano benissimo oppure mettere le coccinelle.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n Il giardino deve essere un piccolo esempio di ecologia casereccia che fa bene anche intorno a noi. Non c\u2019\u00e8 niente di pi\u00f9 deficiente ed egoista del pratino all\u2019inglese. Avete mai pensato a quanto costa in acqua e trattamenti? In ore di tosatura? Io non lo faccio. Poi liberi tutti. Facciamo gli scendiletto all\u2019inglese e lasciamo il resto all\u2019italiana.<\/p>\r\n Il giardino ammette errori. Il giardino \u00e8 complicato. Piccole accortezze quotidiane ma fondamentali. A Masino ha copiato (bene) la Francia. Gente saltava correva ecc. Mi sono preoccupato e lui ha detto che era un giardino sicuro. Nessun cespuglio. Visioni lunghe, alberi con tronco pulito. Nessun pezzo di carta per terra. Nelle gabbie degli uomini curavano degli orti pubblici. Si ma ho bisogno di spazio per le due piante invece gli architetti si allargano, sgomitano.<\/p>\r\n Cambiare un paesaggio richiede audacia. le piante devono vivere con esuberanza ma ci vuole previsione, cura e protezione. La natura va protetta perch\u00e9 deve vivere tranquilla. L\u2019architetto deve imparare che c\u2019\u00e8 qualcosa oltre il cemento. Viene abusato l\u2019inerte. Un giardino sporco \u00e8 anche bello. Non tutto \u00e8 una linea. L\u2019esuberanza serve. Gli alberi non sono pali. La natura non \u00e8 nemica. L\u2019architetto deve capire che la natura cresce. Bisogna lasciare il passo a piante robuste e forti che non hanno bisogno di veleni.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n (L\u2019uomo deve reinserirsi nella natura e non mettersi al di sopra).<\/strong><\/p>\r\n I giardini pubblici in Italia sono stati fantastici. Torino aveva una storia di giardini pubblici con un sindaco che li fece lui perch\u00e9 era pi\u00f9 bravo dei giardinieri. Il giardino pubblico \u00e8 molto differente dal giardino privato. Due mondi che si possono contrapporre. Oggi dobbiamo fare attenzione alle risorse e al chimico. La mia \u00e8 tutta intuizione. Io ho naso. Non sono raffinato. Sono un ecologista di periferia. Perch\u00e9 devo spruzzare i pomodori di poltiglia bordolese e poi mangiarli? Avere un orto \u00e8 un privilegio immenso perch\u00e9 so con cosa viene concimato.<\/p>\r\n Il libretto per combattere le malattie non serve se non all\u2019industria chimica.<\/p>\r\n Io faccio il compost anche con la carta, foglie secche, cacche del cane, marcisce e diventa supporto.<\/p>\r\n Il giardino deve essere un piccolo esempio di ecologia casereccia che fa bene anche intorno a noi.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n Quando ero giovane qualcuno mi apr\u00ec una finestra sul golf. Questi prati hanno tappeti penosissimi. I golf club grandi hanno i green keeper che passano il tempo a fare i chimici. In effetti sono perfetti ma a scapito dei nostri vecchi e cari prati per i quali spezzo uno spadone perch\u00e9 a maggio fiorivano. A giugno venivano tagliati e poi in luglio davano una seconda fioritura e nel resto dell\u2019anno sempre qualcosa.\u00a0 Si possono piantare rose, ma qualsiasi cosa al posto del prato all\u2019inglese.<\/p>\r\n Per proteggere le piante do il verderame. Avrei voluto fornirvi un elenco di questi, ma non l\u2019ho trovato da nessuna parte. Poco male: vorr\u00e0 dire che faremo un secondo articolo.
