Spontaneous garden in Roero<\/p>\n
This spontaneous garden is located among the hills of Asti, in the area of \u200b\u200bthe Alfieri lands between the municipalities of San Damiano and Cisterna d’Asti, the landscape has an ancient flavor (d’antan we would say here in Piedmont). Wide valleys alternate with gentle hills covered with hazelnut groves and small wooded plots.<\/p>\n

Despite its proximity to the well-known Langhe and Roero, this territory does not enjoy the same fame, however its beauty has not escaped many, in particular the Dutch and Americans who in recent years have bought numerous properties to be able to spend long periods of year in the quiet of lower Piedmont.<\/p>\n

In this context, inside an old farmhouse renovated for residential purposes, the duo formed by the architect Monica Novara and the landscape architect Michele Boaretti with the name of Campo.Studio, found themselves working on a large garden size characterized by limited flat portions and organized in a successive series of cliffs of land alternating with large earth slopes.<\/p>\n

The basic idea, by the express will of the owners, was to give life to a series of different atmospheres suited to the collection of plants from different areas of the world, not separated from each other but, on the contrary, put into dialogue thanks to and peaceful ‘vegetable encroachments’ between one environment and another.<\/p>\n

The theme, although fascinating, immediately highlighted a series of problems of a technical, compositional and ecological nature.<\/p>\n
The first element concerned the insertion of the new garden within a consolidated and strongly characterized landscape. The challenge was to insert the new composition harmoniously so as not to seem like an entity detached from the context.<\/p>\n
Secondly, due to the climatic dynamics of recent years, the need to make the garden coexist with long dry periods and rapid and abundant rains has come to light, which has strongly influenced the choice of plants.<\/p>\n

Due to the vastness of the area, it was decided to build it in lots. The first of which, located near the house, involved a narrow and long earth slope, furrowed in the center by a staircase in Corten steel and stone slabs and finished in the extreme south by a Luserna stone embankment.<\/p>\n

The composition followed precise scientific rules both for the quantity of plants to be used and for their arrangement, adopting the theories of the ‘New Perennial Movement’ which sees Piet Oudolf, Cassian Schmidt and Nigel Dunnet among the main global exponents.<\/p>\n
\nIn this portion of the garden it was decided to create<\/em> a mixed border with a complex structure, obtained from the combination of numerous varieties of perennial herbaceous plants and flowering bulbous plants, designed to guarantee a continuous alternation of blooms, textures and chromatic variations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The structural green elements<\/strong><\/h2>\n
A non-geometric mesh of plants defined as ‘Structural’ due to their persistence and the discrete stability they present in the growth and tillering phase was therefore prepared. Among these we find the splendid Kniphofia<\/em> ‘Echo Mango’ with light orange tubular flowers that repeat themselves from May to September and two varieties of grasses such as the Stipa tenuissima<\/em> with warm and straw-coloured tones and the Festuca amethystina<\/em> with glaucous foliage, in color contrast with the previous ones .<\/p>\n

The green elements that mark the seasons<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Subsequently, the border was enriched with plants with greater mobility or whose above-ground structure undergoes decisive transformations according to the seasons, this to give the garden a dynamic component capable of making it always different over time. Among these we find the Helenium<\/em> and the Phlomis<\/em>, but also the Euphorbia<\/em> ‘Ascot Rainbow’ with its splendid variegated foliage and then the Echinops ritro and the Perovskia<\/em> ‘Little Spire’ carefully following the combination between a majority component of warm colors, combined with notes in contrast in shades of blue-violet.<\/p>\n

Ground cover plants<\/strong><\/h2>\n
The last elements necessary to complete the mixed border are ground cover plants or plants with a considerable tillering capacity. In this case the choice fell on specimens of Geranium<\/em> ‘Biokovo’ and Sedum<\/em> ‘Xenox’ characterized by purple-violet foliage. These were joined by two different varieties of Germanic Iris<\/em> ready to cheer the first heat of May with their corollas.<\/p>\n

Nonostante la vicinanza alle ben note Langhe e al Roero, questo territorio non gode della stessa fama, tuttavia la sua bellezza non \u00e8 sfuggita a molti, in particolare ad Olandesi e Americani che negli ultimi anni hanno acquistato numerose propriet\u00e0 per potervi trascorrere lunghi periodi dell\u2019anno nella quiete del basso Piemonte.<\/p>\r\n

In tale contesto, all\u2019interno di un\u2019antica cascina ristrutturata ai fini abitativi, il duo formato dall\u2019architetto Monica Novara e dall\u2019architetto paesaggista Michele Boaretti con il nome di Campo.Studio, si \u00e8 trovato ad intervenire su un giardino di grandi dimensioni caratterizzato da limitate porzioni pianeggianti ed organizzato in una serie successiva di balze di terreno alternate ad ampie scarpate in terra.<\/p>\r\n

L\u2019idea alla base del progetto<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

Gli scogli da superare <\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
Il tema, sebbene affascinante, ha da subito messo in evidenza una serie di problematiche di natura tecnica, compositiva ed ecologica.<\/p>\r\n
Il primo elemento ha riguardato l\u2019inserimento del nuovo giardino all\u2019interno di un paesaggio consolidato e fortemente caratterizzato. La sfida era quella di inserire in modo armonico la nuova composizione in modo da non sembrare un\u2019entit\u00e0 avulsa dal contesto.<\/p>\r\n
In secondo luogo, a causa delle dinamiche climatiche degli ultimi anni \u00e8 venuta alla luce la necessit\u00e0 di far convivere il giardino con lunghi periodi siccitosi e con rapide e abbondanti piogge, il che ha fortemente influenzato la scelta delle piante.<\/p>\r\n

Come si sono superati gli scogli?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n
A causa della vastit\u00e0 dell\u2019area, si \u00e8 optato per una realizzazione in lotti. Il primo dei quali, posto in prossimit\u00e0 dell\u2019abitazione, ha interessato una stretta e lunga scarpata in terra, solcata nel centro da una scala in acciaio Corten e lastre lapidee e terminata nell\u2019estremo meridionale da una massicciata in pietra di Luserna.<\/p>\r\n

Le regole della composizione<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
La composizione ha seguito precise regole scientifiche sia per il quantitativo di piante da impiegare che per la loro disposizione, facendo proprie le teorie del \u2018New Perennial Movement\u2019 che vede in Piet Oudolf, Cassian Schmidt e Nigel Dunnet tra i principali esponenti a livello globale.<\/p>\r\n
\r\nIn tale porzione del giardino si \u00e8 deciso di realizzare <\/em>un bordo misto a struttura complessa, ottenuto dalla combinazione di numerose variet\u00e0 di erbacee perenni e bulbose da fiore, pensate per garantire una continua alternanza di fioriture, tessiture e variazioni cromatiche.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Gli elementi verdi strutturali<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
\u00c8 stata quindi predisposta una maglia, non geometrica, di piante definite \u2018Strutturali\u2019 per via della loro persistenza e per la discreta stabilit\u00e0 che presentano nella fase di crescita e accestimento. Gli elementi verdi che scandiscono le stagioni<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
A seguire si \u00e8 arricchito il bordo con piante dotate di maggiore mobilit\u00e0 o la cui struttura fuori terra subisce decise trasformazioni a seconda delle stagioni, questo per dare al giardino una componente dinamica in grado di renderlo sempre diverso nel tempo.
