Gertrude Jekyll was born in 1843 in London. She studied art and painting and is considered one of the most influential landscape artists of the early 20th century. In her studies, she is particularly struck by Turner and Monet’s use of color to achieve exciting effects.<\/p>\n

How did Gertrude Jekyll’s passion for the garden begin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
We must think that the gardens of that time were not the size of those today. What they called gardens were plots of land of several acres where the part closest to the house was landscaped with lawns and flowering shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Moving away from the house, you came across woods, clearings, rivers and many other scenarios full of wild beauty.<\/p>\n

Gertrude Jekyll’s books and articles<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Jekyll wrote many books and many articles for the most prominent gardening magazines of the time. This one we are talking about, “Testament of a Gardener”, is a posthumous book and collects forty of his articles, building a rather complete vision of his mature work.<\/p>\n
It’s not easy to read a Gertrude Jekyll book. The constant references to plants with scientific and non-scientific names, some of which no longer exist, often make his lines lists difficult to remember and reconstruct in one’s mind to visualize flowerbeds. You have to read it lightly, glossing over these sequences of scientific names a bit and enjoying the almost adoring descriptions of a plant or a place in its smallest aspects.<\/p>\n
He often helps himself with drawings and photos. There are diagrams in pen, in plan that make up spots with a name inside. The photographs are necessarily in black and white, as color does not yet exist. A sure way to understand his work, for those who don’t have all the existing plants memorized, is to visit the gardens that still host his work and which we point out at the bottom of the article and which you see in the photos.<\/p>\n

How does Gertrude Jeckyll structure her garden projects?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
His studies in art, painting, architecture and botany can only be reflected in the gardens he designs. The structure of his constructions is clear. <\/p>\n
For example, a design mechanism that he had discovered was that the cold colors in a flowerbed should be placed towards the beginning and end of the same, while the warm ones should go to the center. Furthermore, it is not advisable to include strong and delicate colors in a single flowerbed. These indications give the composition that pathos that he wanted to achieve visually.<\/p>\n
Another precaution is to pay attention to the mixing of the colors of the leaves in the flowerbeds. In front, for example, he suggests always inserting gray leaf essences such as cineraria maritima or stachys lanata which lighten and complete the composition.<\/p>\n
Like any self-respecting landscape designer, he builds the groups of plants so that each season has its own beauties, including flowers, leaves and berries, but he goes further by inviting us to cover some shrubs which, after a single annual flowering, they will no longer attract attention.<\/p>\n

How many plants could be used in the early twentieth century?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Gertrude Jekyll often spoke about how many types of plants were at her disposal compared to the past and she rejoiced at the variety of effects she was able to create by mixing them. Each time, reading these lines, I thought about how much else could have been invented today when there are 100 times as many plants available. Even with a limited number of plants, he managed to introduce a large quantity of colors and shapes into a garden that are often not even present in today’s gardens.<\/p>\n
His vision of the formal garden is interesting. Come nasce la passione per il giardino di Gertrude Jekyll?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
Dobbiamo pensare che i giardini di allora non erano delle dimensioni di quelli odierni. Quelli che loro chiamavano giardini erano appezzamenti di terreno di svariati acri dove la parte pi\u00f9 vicina alla casa veniva progettata a prato e arbusti da fiore ed erbacee perenni. Allontanandosi dalla casa, si incontravano boschi, radure, fiumi e molti altri scenari ricchi di selvatica bellezza.<\/p>\r\n
Passeggiare nel giardino era un\u2019esperienza completa a contatto con la natura. La giovane Gertrude poteva avvicinarsi non solo ai fiori, ma poteva anche apprendere il comportamento delle piante nei loro habitat naturali.<\/p>\r\n
La passione per quello che poi sar\u00e0 il suo lavoro di giardiniera e paesaggista nasce quindi trascorrendo gran parte del suo tempo di bimba tra le piante del giardino.<\/p>\r\n

Impara a conoscere gli alberi ed il loro comportamento nei boschi, ma anche le felci e le piante da sottobosco facendone elementi strutturali dei suoi giardini. C\u2019\u00e8 sempre, infatti, un avvicinamento al bosco nel progetto e svariate \u201caiuole\u201d nel bosco che hanno lo scopo di accompagnare la vista di chi vi passeggia, ma anche di fare da sfondo a piante pi\u00f9 importanti.<\/p>\r\n

Abbiamo visto come nasce la passione di Gertrude Jekyll per il giardino e per ci\u00f2 che ci vive, ma com'\u00e8 diventata la sua professione?<\/p>\r\n
Ha modo di viaggiare ed incontrare proprietari di giardini e progettisti che le aprono la mente all\u2019organizzazione degli spazi in giardino.<\/p>\r\n
Prima di lei c\u2019era il giardino Tudor ricco di prati, siepi e aiuole a \u201cnodo\u201d cio\u00e8 potati in modo da ricordare appunto dei nodi (vedi l\u2019articolo sull\u2019\"arte topiaria\u201d qui<\/a><\/span>). Gertrude Jekyll, insieme a pochi altri, \u00e8 stata la fautrice di un diametrale cambio di approccio alla progettazione dei giardini.<\/p>\r\n
I desideri del committente non sono pi\u00f9 al centro della progettazione dei giardini, ma si ritrova il giusto rispetto per le piante.<\/p>\r\n

I libri e gli articoli di Gertrude Jekyll<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
La Jekyll ha scritto molti libri e moltissimi articoli per le riviste di giardinaggio pi\u00f9 in vista dell\u2019epoca. Questo, di cui parliamo, \u201cTestamento di un giardiniere\u201d, \u00e8 un libro postumo e raccoglie quaranta dei suoi articoli costruendo una visione piuttosto completa del suo lavoro maturo.<\/p>\r\n
Non \u00e8 facile leggere un libro di Gertrude Jekyll. I continui rimandi alle piante con nomi scientifici e non, alcuni non pi\u00f9 esistenti, rendono spesso le sue righe elenchi difficili da ricordare e ricostruire nella propria mente per visualizzarne delle aiuole. Bisogna leggerlo con leggerezza, glissando un po\u2019 su queste sequenze di nomi scientifici e godendosi le descrizioni quasi adoranti di una pianta o di un luogo nei suoi pi\u00f9 piccoli aspetti.<\/p>\r\n
Spesso si aiuta con disegni e foto. Ci sono schemi a penna, in pianta che compongono macchie con dentro un nome. Le fotografie, per forza di cose sono in bianco e nero, non esistendo ancora il colore. Un metodo sicuro per capire il suo lavoro, per chi non ha a memoria tutte le piante esistenti, \u00e8 visitare i giardini che ancora accolgono il suo lavoro e che vi segnaliamo in fondo all\u2019articolo e che vedete nelle foto.<\/p>\r\n

Come struttura i progetti dei suoi giardini Gertrude Jeckyll?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
Gli studi d'arte, pittura, architettura e botanica non possono che riflettersi nei giardini che progetta. La struttura delle sue costruzioni \u00e8 chiara.<\/p>\r\n
Ad esempio un meccanismo progettuale che aveva scoperto \u00e8 che i colori freddi, in un\u2019aiuola, vanno messi verso l\u2019inizio e la fine della stessa, mentre quelli caldi vanno al centro. Inoltre non conviene inserire in un'unica aiuola colori forti e colori delicati. Queste indicazioni danno alla composizione quel pathos che voleva ottenere visivamente.<\/p>\r\n
Un'altra accortezza \u00e8 l\u2019attenzione alla mescolanza dei colori delle foglie nelle aiuole. Davanti, per esempio, suggerisce di inserire sempre essenze a foglia grigia come la cineraria maritima o la stachys lanata che schiariscono e completano la composizione.<\/p>\r\n
Come ogni paesaggista che si rispetti costruisce i gruppi di piante in modo che ogni stagione abbia le sue bellezze, tra fiori, foglie e bacche, ma si spinge oltre invitando a coprire con rampicanti di clematidi o altro, alcuni arbusti che, dopo un'unica fioritura annuale, non attireranno pi\u00f9 l\u2019attenzione.<\/p>\r\n
Lasciare infatti che una pianta ne copra un\u2019altra \u00e8 un concetto che oggi non troviamo spesso espresso.<\/p>\r\n

Quante piante si potevano utilizzare nei primi del novecento?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
Gertrude Jekyll, parlava spesso di quanti tipi di piante fossero a sua disposizione rispetto al passato e se ne rallegrava per la variet\u00e0 di effetti che riusciva a dare mischiandole. Ogni volta, leggendo queste righe, ho pensato a quanto altro avrebbe potuto inventarsi oggi che le piante a disposizione sono 100 volte tanto. Pur con un numero limitato di piante, riusciva a introdurre in un giardino una gran quantit\u00e0 di colori e di forme spesso non presenti neanche nei giardini odierni.<\/p>\r\n
Interessante la sua visione del giardino formale. Forse oggi lo chiameremmo \u201cdi vaste dimensioni\u201d perch\u00e9, per come ne parla, preferendo il giardino mediterraneo pi\u00f9 intimistico, viene da pensare che intenda un giardino dove le aiuole si perdono in uno spazio troppo ampio per essere valorizzate.<\/p>\r\n

Cosa possiamo imparare ancora da Gertrude Jekyll? E cosa non possiamo riproporre oggi?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n
La dimensione delle aiuole di cui lei parla \u00e8 raramente proponibile oggi per i giardini moderni. Bisogna ridimensionare i ragionamenti. Il terreno nel quale metteva a dimora queste entusiasmanti ed enormi aiuole veniva prima trattato ogni anno fino alla profondit\u00e0 di 1\/1,5 mt. questo tipo di approccio oggi non \u00e8 fattibile sia per i costi che per le disponibilit\u00e0 idriche ed il cambiamento climatico.<\/p>\r\n
Uno degli insegnamenti importanti, invece, \u00e8 mettere per specie un numero dispari di esemplari vicini, non solo una per specie, in modo che si abbia un bel colpo d\u2019occhio di fiori di quel tipo.<\/p>\r\n
