It is long-lived with twisted branches and shiny leaves. It blooms from May to August with red-orange flowers. The fruits, globose and leathery, ripen in autumn. It prefers well-drained soil and tolerates drought and temperatures down to -10°C. The fruit, rich in juicy edible seeds rich in cultural symbolism, is appreciated in cooking and also used for tinctures and astringent preparations.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Scheda botanica” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

IDENTIFICATION

Scientific name:

Punica granatum.

Italian common name:

Melograno

Family:

Lythraceae (previously Punacaceae)

Origin:

Native to southwestern Asia up to the Himalayan regions. It appears on the bas-reliefs of ancient Egypt, in the Odyssey, in the hanging gardens of Babylon. The Romans discovered it in Carthage and therefore called it Malum punicum – Apple of Carthage. In Spain he is introduced by the Moors in the gardens of the Alhambra: the city of Granada will make a great fortune thanks to him, consequently deciding to give his name to the city. For the Greeks it was the symbol of rebirth and life, but also of the cycle of the seasons and of death. Today in Italy it is given at Christmas or New Year’s as a sincere wish for luck, health and prosperity.

The peel of the unripe fruits, strongly tannic, is used to extract a red dye for the tanning of that particular type of leather which goes by the name of “Moroccan” and for the coloring of oriental carpets. Until recently, an excellent ink was extracted from the pericarp of the fruit.

In the kitchen:

sweet and fragrant edible fruit

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px||0px||true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][dmg_masonry_gallery gallery=”6409,6415,6421,6419,6417,6411,6423″ columns=”1″ gutter=”300″ zoom_hover=”on” images_size=”dmg_image_extra_large” hover_overlay_effect=”nothing” columns_tablet=”2″ columns_phone=”1″ columns_last_edited=”on|desktop” gutter_tablet=”20″ gutter_phone=”20″ gutter_last_edited=”on|desktop” module_class=”gallery-schede-botaniche” _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” title_text_align=”left” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/dmg_masonry_gallery][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Consiglio MDG” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||20px||false|false” custom_padding=”10px|20px|20px|20px|false|true” border_radii=”on|15px|15px|15px|15px” border_width_all=”4px” border_color_all=”#d5de75″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The mondo del giardino advice

If you were intrigued by the history of the Melograno, you can find more information here where it is explained why it is considered the “True” fruit of Eden and here where symbology and meanings are explored.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Testo (100%)” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Now on horseback!
