It grows in semi-arid areas between 300 and 1,800 meters above sea level. It has an ovate-cylindrical green or yellowish-green stem and a spectacular flower as per the genus. The woolly areoles host red radial spines with a yellowish tip (hence the name “bicolor”) and straight red central spines. The bell-shaped flowers, magenta or pink, up to 10 cm wide, bloom from spring to summer, lasting 3-5 days. It prefers full sun exposure, calcareous soils and regular irrigation in spring and summer, suspending in winter. It propagates by seed and can flower after 3-4 years.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Scheda botanica” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

We thank Elvia Speranza for the supervision of the information who, with her husband Moreno, takes care of the Cactus House with great love and expertise for cacti and succulents.

IDENTIFICATION

Scientific name:

Thelocactus bicolor

Subgenres:

Thelocactus bicolor v. bicolor,Thelocactus bicolor v. bolaensis,Thelocactus bicolor v.commodus,Thelocactus bicolor v.schwarzii,Thelocactus bicolor v. schottii

Family:

Cactaceae

Origin:

the species is native to central-northern Mexico (states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas and Zacateca) and from the USA.
