It reaches a height of 1.5-3 meters and a spread of 2-3 meters, with slightly arched branches. The leaves are small, ovate, serrated, bronze in color at birth, becoming shiny dark green above and light green below, reddening in autumn. It blooms twice a year, in spring and autumn, producing small funnel-shaped white-pink flowers, often with pink shades; the persistent sepals take on a violet hue in late summer. It prefers sunny or semi-shaded exposures and adapts to various types of soil. It is resistant to cold down to -5 ° C, but requires protection from winds and benefits from a light mulch at the base. It requires moderate watering and tolerates short periods of drought. Pruning is generally not necessary, but the plant tolerates it well if done. It can be subject to aphid attacks and, in very humid climates, to powdery mildew.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Scheda botanica” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

IDENTIFICATION

Scientific name:

Abelia grandiflora

Italian common name:

Abelia

Family:

Caprifoliaceae

Origin:

of East Asia, with the main center of diffusion in China

Enviorment:

temperate climates. The first to arrive in Europe was Abelia chinensis, where it was introduced in 1844 by Robert Fortune but discovered by the doctor Clarke Abel from whom it takes its name; the following year Abelia uniflora arrived. Soon both were supplanted by Abelia x grandiflora, a horticultural hybrid between the two species, obtained for the first time in 1886 in the Rovelli nursery in Pallanza. It is a long-flowering, sterile semi-evergreen shrub, flowering until the first cold weather, once very popular in gardens.
