It reaches 2-3 meters in height and width, with an erect and spreading habit. The leaves are oval, persistent, of a shiny dark green color. It blooms from March to May, producing scented flowers with rose-shaped corollas, in various shades from white to dark red. It prefers subtropical environments with rainy summers and dry winters, resisting up to -15 °C, but fears cold winds. It requires fresh, humid and acidic soils, with a pH between 6 and 6.5. If you do not have acidic soil but want to grow acid-loving plants you will have to be persistent in maintaining the acidic soil. To acidify the soil there are many ways, starting from planting conifers (whose needles usually acidify the soil) or collecting the needles from neighbors or, again, often throwing away the blueing fertilizer for hydrangeas that contains iron.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Scheda botanica” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

IDENTIFICATION

Scientific name:

Camellia japonica

Italian common name:

Japanese or flower camellia

Family:

Theaceae

Origin:

originating from Asia, and in particular from China, Japan and Korea

Environment:

it is a subtropical plant and therefore loves rainy summers and dry winters, however it resists the cold, down to -15 °C.
