In ancient times, in fact, the aroma of thyme – perhaps because it was so intense and vigorous – was considered capable of instilling courage, so soldiers toned their bodies by washing it with thyme water, and reinvigorated their soul by drinking thyme herbal teas.<\/p>\n Furthermore, the generic name (Thymus) may be derived from an ancient Greek verb \u201cthyein<\/em>\u201d, meaning \u201cto have a smell\u201d used by Theophrastus (an ancient Greek philosopher and botanist, disciple of Aristotle, author of two extensive botanical treatises), for a fragrant plant used as incense in sacrifices.<\/p>\n vulgaris<\/em> stands for common.<\/p>\n In the Middle Ages, a sprig of thyme was placed under the pillow to keep nightmares away and ladies used to embroider thyme plants on the knights’ insignia as a sign of good luck.<\/p>\n Legends, however, say that, thanks to its scent, the Thyme flower is the favorite of fairies.<\/p>\n Plant suitable for the rock garden. Very slow growth.<\/p>\n Recognition is difficult because it is present in different shapes and with different hairiness of the stem (which you can learn more about on Wikipedia<\/a><\/span>)<\/p>\n It is a melliferous plant, meaning that bees like it and gives excellent honey which however is rare due to the limited areas of thyme cultivated. It was considered the best honey in classical Greece.<\/p>\n To find out how to prepare Thyme flavored honey, read here<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n It adapts perfectly to the creation of splendid dense, colorful lawns that give off, especially when stepped on, an intoxicating scent of lemon, cumin or pine, i.e. the typical aroma of the variety planted.<\/p>\n Other important species are T. serpyllum<\/em>, T. capitatus<\/em>, T. albus<\/em>, T. citriodorus<\/em> and others.<\/p>\n The Priola Nurseries<\/a><\/span> advise us on the preferred combinations which are with Acaena, Antennaria, Armeria, Dianthus, Helianthemum and Sempervivum. Nelle\u00a0Alpi\u00a0si trova soprattutto nel quadrante occidentale.<\/p>\r\n Non sopporta il ristagno idrico. \u00c8 una pianta resistente alla siccit\u00e0 e solitamente non necessit\u00e0 di irrigazione artificiale.<\/p>\r\n per seme, per divisione dei cespi o per talea dei rametti laterali gi\u00e0 lignificati, cio\u00e8 color legno in primavera.<\/p>\r\n In primavera \u00e8 bene rimuovere la vegetazione secca o danneggiata per evitare l'insorgere di malattie.\u00a0Il timo, come il rosmarino e la lavanda, \u00e8 una di quelle piante che non si rigenera se tagliata troppo bassa.<\/p>\r\n le pi\u00f9 comuni sono due ruggini:\u00a0la Puccinia menthae e l'Aecidium thymi\u00a0che provoca macchie rossastre sulla pagina inferiore delle foglie e sui piccioli.<\/p>\r\n I ristagni idrici come gi\u00e0 detto provocano marciumi del colletto o radicale.<\/p>\r\n Gli afidi possono attaccare le giovani foglie.<\/p>\r\n Sappiamo che vengono proposte pi\u00f9 derivazioni del nome Thymus ed essendo tutte credibili, ve le sottoponiamo perch\u00e9 possiate scegliere quella a voi pi\u00f9 consona.<\/p>\r\n Secondo un\u2019ipotesi, la parola Timo deriverebbe dal latino \"thymum-i<\/em>,\" che proviene dal termine \"thymiana-atis<\/em>\", che vuole significare \"molto profumato<\/em>\".<\/p>\r\n In un\u2019altra versione alcuni lo legano al greco\u00a0thym\u00f2s<\/em>, nel suo significato di \u201ccoraggio\u201d, perch\u00e9 i soldati credevano che il suo profumo favorisse l\u2019audacia.\u00a0Nei tempi antichi, infatti, l'aroma del timo - forse perch\u00e9 tanto intenso e vigoroso - era ritenuto capace di infondere coraggio, quindi i soldati tonificavano il corpo lavandolo con acqua di timo, e rinvigorivano l'animo bevendo tisane di timo.<\/p>\r\n Inoltre, il nome generico (Thymus) pu\u00f2 essere derivato da un antico verbo\u00a0greco\u00a0\u201cthyein\u201d<\/em>, che significa \u201cavere un odore\u201d usato da\u00a0Teofrasto\u00a0(un filosofo e botanico greco antico, discepolo di\u00a0Aristotele, autore di due ampi trattati botanici), per una pianta profumata utilizzata come incenso nei sacrifici.<\/p>\r\n vulgaris<\/em> sta per comune.<\/p>\r\n Nel Medioevo si poneva sotto il cuscino un rametto di timo per tenere lontani gli incubi e le dame erano solite ricamare sulle insegne dei cavalieri delle piante di timo come segno di buon auspicio.<\/p>\r\n Le leggende, comunque, narrano che, grazie al suo profumo, il fiore del Timo sia il preferito dalle fate.<\/p>\r\n Pianta adatta al giardino roccioso.
