In Italy it reaches 3-4 meters in height, with leathery, obovate and shiny dark green leaves. It blooms between March and May, producing scented white flowers that turn cream, gathered in umbrella-shaped buds. The fruits are brown capsules containing red seeds. It prefers sunny or semi-shaded exposures, well-drained soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and tolerates saltiness and urban pollution. It resists up to -10 ° C and requires moderate irrigation. Pruning must be done after flowering because it blooms on the branches of the year and helps maintain the desired shape. In Japan, its name is called the Door Tree because it was hung on doors to ward off or cancel an evil magical influence.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Scheda botanica” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

IDENTIFICATION

Scientific name:

Pittosporum tobira

Italian common name:

Pittosporo

Family:

Pittosporaceae

Origin:

originally from southern China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea.

Environment:

Used in many countries around the world with mild winters, such as the Mediterranean ones.

Evergreen or deciduous:

evergreen

Toxicity:

non-poisonous but not edible fruits

PLANT RECOGNITION

Height:

it can reach ten meters in height in its areas of origin, while in Italy it rarely exceeds three or four metres.

Width (extension):

3 – 4 m.

Habit:

arboreal or shrubby

Leaf:

The leaves are persistent, leathery, with a shiny blade, obovate in shape and dark green in colour, alternate, shiny and oblong.

Flower:

The flowers, with five white petals at the opening, then take on a cream color and finally light yellow, gathered in umbrella-shaped tops 5-8 cm wide.

Flowering:

In Italy the plant flowers in March-May.

Fruit:

The fruits are red and contained in small green capsules that turn brown as they ripen.

Trunk:

The bark of Pitosforo is medium dark, thin and cracks very late.
