It grows spontaneously in the Mediterranean scrub up to 1000 meters above sea level, even in urban contexts. It reaches a height of 50-150 cm and a width of about 120 cm. The flowers, varying from blue to violet, bloom between March and October. Rustic and undemanding, rosemary requires exposure to full sun, well-drained soil and moderate watering. The suffix Salvia, as in Salvia officinalis, was coined by Pliny with the meaning of saving, healing. The roots are fibrous and resistant as well as anchoring so it can be used to hold small and medium slopes in place. It is also used in the preparation of liqueurs and for the production of an excellent monofloral honey. It is used in cooking and in phytotherapy, its essential oil has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Scheda botanica” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

IDENTIFICATION

Scientific name:

Rosmarinus officinalis / Salvia rosmarinum

Italian common name:

Rosmarino, Osmarino, Usmarino, Smarino

Family:

Lamiaceae

Origin:

Mediterranean basin: areas of Europe, Africa and Asia bordering the Mediterranean.

Environment:

It is spontaneous in the Mediterranean bush. It is more likely – according to accredited theories – that the name derives from the Latin words “ros” and “marinus” which mean “sea dew” in Latin in relation to the fact that the plant grows spontaneously in the Mediterranean areas near the sea, but other versions cite its derivation from Rosa maris “Sea Rose” or from Rhus maris which means “Sea Shrub”.

The ending of Salvia, as in Salvia officinalis, was coined by Plinus with the meaning of saving, healing.

It is a pioneer species on rocky substrates located in very sunny areas and exposed to the wind, even the salty one. Therefore used, in short, for the reforestation of land that has become sterile after repeated fires.

Annotations

The plant tends to go into standby in the summer, due to its defense mechanisms against the heat. It is easy to find it flowering and fruiting in spring or autumn and even into winter if it is warm.

The roots are fibrous and resistant as well as anchoring so it can be used to hold small and medium-sized slopes in place.

It is also used in the preparation of liqueurs and for the production of excellent monofloral honey.

In pharmacology it is used against depressive states and to support the intellectual and physical vigor of those who need it (consult with a doctor to discuss these principles).

It is a symbol of love, loyalty and remembrance and many cultures place it on the grave as a sign of affection and respect for the deceased. The Egyptians instead placed it in the hands of the deceased because it was a symbol of the immortality of the soul and useful for facilitating the journey to the afterlife.

By the Greeks it was considered an aphrodisiac plant with magical properties linked to fertility and fidelity.

In the Middle Ages its stems were used to forge MAGIC combs that would prevent hair loss. It actually has the ability to stimulate hair follicles.

Even today in England it is believed that a twig, worn in the buttonhole of a dress, can bring good luck.

In the kitchen:

it is one of the most used aromatic plants in the kitchen to flavor meat, fish and vegetables.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px||0px||true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][dmg_masonry_gallery gallery=”7081,7071,7073,7065,7079,7077,7069″ columns=”1″ gutter=”460″ zoom_hover=”on” images_size=”dmg_image_extra_large” hover_overlay_effect=”nothing” columns_tablet=”2″ columns_phone=”1″ columns_last_edited=”on|desktop” gutter_tablet=”20″ gutter_phone=”20″ gutter_last_edited=”on|desktop” module_class=”gallery-schede-botaniche” _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” title_text_align=”left” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/dmg_masonry_gallery][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Consiglio MDG” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||20px||false|false” custom_padding=”10px|20px|20px|20px|false|true” border_radii=”on|15px|15px|15px|15px” border_width_all=”4px” border_color_all=”#d5de75″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The mondo del giardino advice

Due to the green tone of its dark foliage and the particularity of its leaves which give the bush a specific texture, this shrub is placed in flowerbeds in a background or end position with plants that can maximize the dark effect.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Testo (100%)” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Now on horseback!
