The perfect lawn: How do you go about having a beautiful lawn?

What does perfect lawn mean?

Before discovering how to have a beautiful lawn, let’s define what the perfect lawn is.

The perfect lawn is the sports lawn because it is very pampered and followed. You can find it thick, green and very low in football fields as well as golf courses. Lawn is also a good example of a perfect lawn.

The secrets of a perfect lawn are very close tufts of grass and a successful and deep root development.

But how do you get these two things?

Simple: in order for the tufts of grass to be very close together, grasses other than those of the lawn must be eliminated – the famous weeds – and to obtain a good rooting it is necessary to irrigate regularly, making sure that the water supplied is well distributed, is not too much or too little.

Now let’s analyze the two components well.

Take a look at the photos of a golf course: the lawn looks like a green sea, it is so uniform. This is because the blades of grass are so close to each other that from a distance they give the idea of being a carpet. And as for a carpet we have to think, where the knots are mounted very close and then all cut to the same height.

How do you go about having a beautiful lawn?

If you want to get a perfect lawn, you don’t have to skip steps.

The tips in this article must be followed one after the other, even if you have a gardener do them.

First step to have a beautiful lawn: soil analysis

The very first thing to do is the soil analysis. How to understand the composition of the soil? In this article we want to be honest: certain types of soil will never allow a perfect lawn if they are not corrected in the composition.

To find out what type of soil you are dealing with, read the article How to understand the composition of a soil. We will talk about acid, calcareous, clayey soils and how to transform them into good soils.

Sowing the soil: periods and techniques for a perfect lawn

Once the good soil is obtained, sowing is carried out. Sowing is easy if you don’t underestimate the question. There are better times and a suitable technique.

The best times are March – after the frosts – and September.

Sowing in January and August is strongly discouraged due to adverse climatic conditions that will depress you due to poor, intermittent or even zero results, but your efforts will make healthy weeds sprout.

The technique must be developed but even a private individual can succeed by training a couple of days. You can walk around the lawn with a bag full of other things (sawdust, lavender, sand) and train your arm to throw seeds. Don’t skimp on quantity – with seeds, not sand or lavender.

Then you have to cover it with earth and even here you won’t have to skimp because the birds can gobble up all the seeds.

Finally it should be wet and kept moist to allow the seeds to germinate. The topic of garden irrigation is very important so I suggest you also read the article “How to water the garden” where you will find all the information about how to irrigate the garden, how much it costs and how it works.

Mowing the lawn: tips and frequency of mowing after sowing

After sowing and obtained the first wonderful lawn that will make you very proud – the work in the garden is so good for the spirit – the lawn must be cut.

During the first period, the cuts must be numerous to stimulate root development and thicken the tufts.

Mowing the lawn also has its rules such as how often to mow or if there is a time of day when it is best to do it. If you want to learn more about the topic or when you are ready to cut, you can read the article “How to mow the perfect lawn”.

Remove weeds for a beautiful lawn

At this point we must talk about weeds, those that are not tufts of grass but herbaceous with more or less broad leaves that creep between the blades of grass and grow faster and healthier than everything else.

These weed seeds are carried by the wind or unintentionally by birds. They are native plants (i.e. local) and therefore perfectly integrated with the climate. Since the environment in which they are ‘ideal’ they give their best and can also be difficult to eliminate.

One surefire way is to pull out the root.

For the presence of small or large quantities of weeds, the steps we talked about above are basic:

good soil (if you don’t correct clay soil, for example, you will find yourself with lots of weeds and little lawn and the grubbing work will be exhausting)

and well-planned and executed irrigation (a little water, in fact, is welcome by weeds but insufficient for grass).

Roll Lawn vs Sowing for a perfect lawn

A final chapter is to be devoted to the “rolled lawn” or “ready lawn”. Surely this type of lawn eliminates all the first part of sowing and immediately gives a high level “ready effect”.

However, it does not completely eliminate soil preparation because if you lay a lawn in rolls on clay soil the roots will struggle to take root and you will quickly find yourself with an ugly lawn for the reasons described above.

The soil, even if good, must still be prepared and modeled as we have described above to ensure that the roots of the grass are in contact with the ground below to root underneath immediately.

I therefore recommend, even in this case, to read the related dedicated article.

Even the management of weeds, if everything is done properly, will be less demanding because the space between the blades of grass will be smaller and will not leave areas available for these essences.
