Case 1 – Simona’s garden

The Planning and Design category helps you study and design your garden through a guided video path. Real cases are analyzed, like Simona’s, to apply the concepts learned: style, sun exposure, choice and positioning of plants, vegetable garden and paths. The goal is to give awareness to the owner, improve dialogue with professionals and obtain a functional, harmonious and tailor-made garden.

Case 1 – Simona’s garden

Hello and welcome to the Planning and Design category.

In this category we deal with organizational and design issues.

THE RULES

To be able to design a green space you must first study it.

To study your own green space we have created a series of videos that each address an aspect of the study and you can find it in the Design category and again below  “Build your garden

Now we will move on to the next step, that is, to give you some examples of garden studies that you have sent us in order to see how the rules of the previous videos apply.

In fact, you have kindly sent us the current situation of your gardens asking us how to resolve some areas that are not as you would like.

Mondo del Giardino will therefore support you in the difficult work of analyzing your space.

Then, for example, you will be the one to build what you like or you can turn to a professional, but knowing exactly what you want and why.

This will also allow the professional to work better and obtain better results in a shorter time.

If you are watching this video and want to follow the same process with your garden, we will refer to the published study video at each step.

Case 1 – Simona’s garden: THE EXAMPLE

This garden is in the province of Milan.

The first check is related to the video “what style to give to the garden”.

Simona has modern furniture at home and a taste in favor of minimalism, so her garden will be essential, without frills.

Let’s look at the plan: As you can see, the sun rises and sets along the long side of the garden. This means that the only part in the shade will be the one to the west of the house for about half a day.

Why are we interested in this? Because Simona wants to plant hydrangeas that will only be able to go in the shaded area for half a day. Hydrangeas are in fact semi-shade plants and could not survive anywhere else.

The rest of the garden will be able to benefit from the sun all day.

VEGETABLE GARDEN AND FRUIT PLANTS

Simona wants a vegetable garden and fruit trees and this is compatible with a garden that is mostly in the sun all day.

The only thing to be careful about when positioning the fruit trees is that they do not shade the vegetable garden and the aromatic herbs area.

Simona is thinking of placing the fruit trees in the center of the garden to the east and we agree with her. For the aromatic herbs and the vegetable garden, however, the situation is more complicated.

Let’s say we put the vegetable garden and the herbs to the north, on the long side as indicated by Simona. If the sun were to rise further north than stated, during the morning the border hedge (which will certainly be inserted) could shade the vegetable garden for part of the morning and this is not good. So in this case the vegetable garden should be placed to the south.

On the contrary, if the sun rises further south.

Mrs Simona says that the table and deckchairs are under the porch so there should not be a path that leads somewhere, but rather a series of paths that allow you to walk around the garden.

THE LANDSCAPER’S ADVICE

Recomended by the landscaper is to position the fruit trees in a semicircle towards the house and to delimit the area with a shaped border, in this regard you can read the article “Topiary art” or free but of low essences such as Berberis or Cotoneaster to give order to the fruit area behind.

Now let’s think about what you can see from inside the house. In the kitchen there is a window towards the vegetable garden and in the kitchen and in the bedroom there are two French windows towards the fruit trees. In correspondence with the window you could put a fountain (which will also be used for the vegetable garden).

In correspondence with the French windows you will have to put an accent and you could take advantage of the Berberis hedge to insert two entrances towards the fruit trees bordered by flowering shrubs (all the same) a little taller than the Berberis.

What you have followed is a metaproject that is based on the little information collected and has the sole purpose of helping you use videos to build your project.

It cannot and does not want to replace the work of a designer who will take care of you in a very different way, keeping you safe from errors and making you take a beautiful path of you and your garden.

Thank you for following us and we hope we have been helpful.

Now on horseback! The work awaits us! Our new wonderful outdoor space is about to be born!

GOOD WORK and… if you have any questions, write to info@mondodelgiardino.com
